Not a coffee table book, not a trail guide, it is rather, a book to bring unknown parts of the trail world to your attention It can serve as a starting point for planning a trip to a place you had been interested in, or had never considered Great for browsing for trip ideas.

Good idea generator for places to go For example, I wouldn t have thought of Cape Breton Docked a full star for not having maps Yes, it would have added 50 pages, but seriously

  5. Steve Congdon Steve Congdon says:

  6. Emily Bragg Emily Bragg says:

solid travel book I do roll my eyes a bit when all of the middle eastern trails have oh, I never felt unsafe blurbs that were entirely written by men still well done though, and a good variety

2.5 stars really This book can t make up its mind whether it is an armchair hike book or an actual guide It s neither rich enough visually to be an armchair book nor detailed enough to be a real guide The 50 hikes each have 3 4 pages of text and usually a single full page photo Utterly inexplicably, some of the hikes lack even the single photo The text is rather superficial, having about 2 3 glowing praise of the area and 1 3 mention of trails though no mileages, maps, or other useful info 2.5 stars really This book can t make up its mind whether it is an armchair hike book or an actual guide It s neither rich enough visually to be an armchair book nor detailed enough to be a real guide The 50 hikes each have 3 4 pages of text and usually a single full page photo Utterly inexplicably, some of the hikes lack even the single photo The text is rather superficial, having about 2 3 glowing praise of the area and 1 3 mention of trails though no mileages, maps, or other useful information like that is given The emphasis is also on guided and supported hikes to put its contents even further out of reach of the typical hiker Not to mention the hike in Hawaii that only a dozen or so people a year can make puh leeze Let s face it, if I hit 10 of these spots in my lifetime, I m probably doing OK, so I purchased this largely as a read and dream book rather than one providing actual logistics Therefore, I was left rather disappointed with this book

Warning this book is a bunch of general summaries about great areas to hike, not specific hikes Once I got over that concept, I picked up some great travel ideas for the future and enjoyed reading about the author s experiences broken up into fifty 2 3 page segments each segment is by a different author very familiar with the highlighted area Nice read if you understand the purpose.

Beautiful photos accompany each of the chosen places to hike all around the world The author interviewed a variety of folks to get their opinions on the best places to hike, the most memorable, etc A description is followed by If you go , how to get there, where to stay, times of year to visit and if there are outfitters guides or groups to go with.
