Okay listen up girls because this book has some major important life advice hereIf you happen to get kidnapped and abused by a heroin addict when you are 14 yrs old and then run into him when you are 20 only to have him abuse you again Then he kicks his heroin addiction yet still abuses you just a couple of times only to later reveal that he didn't enjoy it as much because he now loves you That's totally fine You should totally marry that guy because he's sorry

Review of ‘Spy Glass’ Opal Cowan #3By Maria V Snyder Thanks Net Galley for the ARCTo be Published September 17th 2010 by Mira BooksI wrote this review almost 6 years ago and I still agree with what I originally wrote The overall story was fine It was a huge bonus to see Yelena Janko Ari Iris and Valek again But where was Zitora? She was a huge part of the last two books but was absent from this one and she seemed to have her own story to fulfil at the end of ‘Sea Glass’ Perhaps a new series? That would be well worth the waitYelena Janko Ari Iris and Valek were very pleasant to read again and they added a lot to the skittish plot and weak character developmentsNow to the part of the story that enraged me to the point that it was difficult to finish the book If you do not want spoilers than please do not read any Opal and her overall relationship choice Wow it is a little strange that a book which is undoubtedly read by younger people would have one of the core characters enter into a relationship with the man who and this is a uote from the book “A year and a half ago he had kidnapped and tortured me” This relationship was also started when she was in a relationship with someone else There has been an attempt to explain this away with the blood magic addiction Seriously? Devlin also seems to be present as some kind of ‘Valek’ type replacement Sadly it did not work Dislike for him still lingered heavily from the previous books It is also one of the most distractingly annoying aspects of this book; being asked to accept a character that deceived kidnapped and tortured also possibly raped the main person and the excuses offered to explain why were not very adeuate I also believe it is not the best idea to gloss over such important issues Lastly the portrayal of some of the characters was one of the most distracing aspects One of the worst off was Kade it seemed like he was treated as a means to an end and as such was reduced to a meek doorstep that was hardly present in the story at all Perhaps he was off with Zitora? It is a shame that one of the most recognisable people from the previous two books who the readers have indentified strongly with Opal was reduced to this Spending two books setting this charcter up only to tear them down almost feels like a waste of time The feeling that comes from reading cover–to cover is that there was no real idea where his story was going and that it was a seat of your pants story Again perhaps Kade will get his own spin off series? One of the better things in this book was the twist with the black diamonds It would seem there is another Glass Wizard uinn was an awesome person to read and seemed to be a new addition to Opals collection of people Dealing with the problems within the compound was also a good way to pick up the pace of the storyline and bring the interest back to the wider story Some twists and turns in the book were also a well played even if you guessed what would happen‘Spy Glass’ seems to have good bits and not so good bits However it is still enjoyable if you can put these issues to the side Almost 6 years later and I now disagree with this It was not enjoyable and this story bothers me to this dayDon't bother reading this bookTHIS IS MY OPINION I enjoyed the other aspects of the book howeverI will admit it is hard to recommend a book that contains certain events that are against my morals

This book wasn’t horrible but I did have issues with certain plot points and the rest was pretty boringOpal irritated me in this book because she view spoiler cheated on her boyfriend Twice If she was going to do that she should have just broken up with him hide spoiler

The writing style and plot were good even though a bit boring and the world building was amazing as always Valek finally made an appearance and Leif's wedding was beautiful addition to the story But I didn't like Opal from the start of this series Her constant whining for example Even though she has home and loving family And let's not forget about her many many love interests She has three of them actually view spoilerAnd now her cheating on Kade with Devlen I didn't like Devlen and didn't believe in his sudden change for a 'good guy'I certainly don't get why would she want to marry him? He tortured her both mentally and physically Twice in the past He even used Ulrick's her former boyfriend's body to seduce and sleep with her And then he tortured her again Yeah he was addicted to blood magic but that doesn't make it ok If a drug addict does something horrible does his addiction justify his actions?Beware because now Devlen has changed He's so sorry and wants amends so it's absolutely fine to have a healthy relationship with this guy because he's so different now No no and no There is absolutely nothing romantic about this I couldn't understand her reasons for leaving Kade my poor poor Kade and wanting to be with someone like that not to mention that I didn't believe in her sudden love for Devlen at all so this mostly ruined the book for me and the fact that I just plainly can't stand the MC hide spoiler

SPOILERS FOR THE PREVIOUS STORIESNo no no This one didn't work for me on sooo many different levels which is disappointing It's only because I am a fan of this author's other stories that I have trudged on hoping for a shiftFirst there's the totality of the character that is Devlen He has tortured both mentally and physically Opal in the past and now it's been put off to something he did because of blood magic Let's just insert a convenient 'soul reader' to instantly say that a certain character is no longer 'bad' and hello easy street I don't care what kind of magical stupor you're under that would cause bad behavior memories of torture alone would never allow me to interact with that person Never ever ever seriously Ever I've seen the various reviewscomments here on Goodreads on whether Opal was raped by Devlen and it's fine if you don't think so call it what you want Of course in reality we're never going to have people conveniently switching souls and then pretending to be your significant other For me the fact is Opal thought she was with Ulrick and that she consented to sex is secondary to the fact that he wasn't Ulrick It doesn't matter if she enjoyed being with Delven in a Ulrick suit she didn't know it was really the man who inhabited her worst nightmares and caused a lot of her feelings of inadeuacy Don't be too surprised here but even creeps can act nice to their victims to get the results they want I know crazy right? If I were Opal I would have felt totally violated my trust in my own judgement would have been in shamblessound like Opal at all? Maybe I should have stopped reading after Opal comments on Yelena's 'readings' on Devlen because obviously it's enough to leave me disgustedYet I continued on because I thought there would be a story in here somewhere A story that showed Opal coming into her own person Yet throughout most of this story that is still painfully absent as we are forced to accompany her through a sham of a plot to obtain her missing blood And even though that's the focus of the plot it meanders here and there with no direction other than to insert convenient events to recollect upon later in the story It felt like I was reading something completely different by last third of the book and not in a good wayThen there's the generally unenjoyable dialogue and childish petty characters across the board These are Snyder's characters and I've liked them in the past especially in Yelena's series but this time even though they had the same names and were supposed to be the same people some didn't sound like themselves They seemed out of character to me especially Valek in this one but then again I'm only one reader and I'm sure some will be fine with it So anyway in the interest of finding a balance between brevity fail and getting this stuff off my chest I'm ending it here I wouldn't read any books about Opal if you paid me and I hope that if Snyder continues to write in this world it will not result in the overwhelming disappointment I have had in this series

I feel as if it fell short of the first two I was happy Valek was there for most of the book however many of the other side characters lacked time in the book I felt there was very little Ari Janco Yelena and none of Zitora Secondly I still find it creepy that she ended up with Devlen He tortured and raped her and yet she still fell in love with him? I can't see that happening I also really liked Kade and Snyder set them up in the first book and kept their relationship growing It felt like Kade was blindsided randomly and just kicked out of the pictureAll in all I thought it was alright but far short of the other two and Yelena's series

Phew I'm done with Maria V Snyder and her series That tiny part of me that suffers OCD can finally be put to sleepWhen I first read Poison Study I thought Snyder's writing was terrific Tight plot where things really made sense and excellent characters—smart funny and relatable Then slowly but surely the uality dropped Books #2 and #3 in the Study series were pretty meh I still liked them but it was mostly because of some of the characters having made such a good first impression previously The fact that I didn't like almost any of the new characters introduced after the first book should have been all the warning I needed not to start a new series But of course where's the fun in heeding good advice? So I started the Glass series still riding the positive feelings left by that first book Big mistake Even with that injection of optimism I still didn't like Opal Zitora and the whole group of male protagonists However the second book was already out so I just kept going on autopilot and read it That only made me dislike these characters There are a few exceptions here and there of course but not nearly enough to make up for all the rest Had this book been out back then I would have read it right away if only to find out how things turned out But this wasn't published until several months later By that time I had lost any desire of reading this Every now and then however a stray thought would cross my mind along the lines of I wonder if she ever did manage to get her magic back or will she end up with the idiot without any personality or the idiot who tortured her at several different moments in her life? In the end curiosity won over common sense and I decided to give it a try Well let's just say that curiosity sucksEverything that bothered me before made an appearance this time as well I don't even feel like going into a detailed account of all that I found wrong here I know I'm probably being unfair but going against my better judgment and suffering the conseuences for it makes me grouchyFor what it's worth let me point you to Penny's review She manages to give a uick funny rundown of the series and this book in particular pointing out its flaws without devolving into an angry troll—unlike me If I try to do the same

  8. Penny Penny says:

uick review Opal Cowan glassmaker one trick wonder and victim extraordinaire spends the majority of the first two Glass books helping others rehashing traumatic experiences sparring or traveling from one place to another At practically every single village she visits and sometimes in the middle of nowhere she's beaten or falsely imprisoned or tortured or kidnapped The girl just can't catch a break people want to steal her magic or you know just want her to die But resourceful girl that she is Opal always manages to get out of sticky situations somehow Along the way she picks up a couple of suitors Kade a powerful stormdancer with the personality of a dead fish and a never ending supply of weather analogies; Ulrick a handsome extremely overprotective glassmaker who lacks confidence integrity and any significant amount of magic; and Devlin a good looking former blood magic addict whispers who used to torture Opal and switched souls with a very willing Ulrick in order to seduce Opal whisper mumbling and then kidnap and torture her further And then fall in love with her And then save her life And save her friends lives And then apologize to Opal for all the horrid things he did to her And finally turn himself into the authorities after giving Opal a gift And a kiss BTW at some point Opal drains Devlin of all his magic I just can't remember whenAll caught up now? Good In Spy Glass the final installment in the Glass series Opal is mourning the loss of her magic which she sacrificed in order to save the day at the end of Sea Glass Ever since then she hasn't been the same feels as though she's lost her whole identity Instead of accepting a lifetime without magic Opal decides she's going to get it back At one point Opal pays Devlin a visit in prison in order to uestion him about blood magic and if he knows if any of the blood taken from her before she lost her magic is preserved and hidden somewhere While meeting with the newly reformed Devlin Opal discovers she has extremely mixed feelings about him On one hand she know she can't trust him he still terrifies her And on the other she feels drawn to him because he too has been stripped of all his magic He understands what she's going through when no one else does Also he's changed so much is humble and repentant On top of everything Opal is trying to decide if she wants to spend the rest of her life with Kade the storm dancer Lots of drama ensues Sounds like a great series right? ; Okay so I'm not being completely fair I made it sound so much worse then it actually is It's not that bad Although it's not that good either That being said I still like Maria V Snyder's Glass series Yeah I like it Why? I can't say why Really I can't Overall the series was satisfying in a way I just can't seem to pinpoint Maybe I like my protagonists to be beaten bloody on regular basis Or maybe I on some level or other like dysfunctional relationships I don't know I just know that I like how this series wrapped up So yeah Three stars uick uestion containing a spoilerWhen did Devlin supposedly rape Opal? Everyone keeps saying Devlin raped Opal but I don't remember that ever happening Are they referring to the time that he did a soul transfer with Ulrick so he could seduce Opal? You know the time they had consensual sex which if we're being honest here wasn't an unpleasant experience for either of them at the time If that's what everyone is talking about and I think it is I'm going to disagree He didn't rape her He deceived her He tricked her Lied to her And yeah it was a completely evil a hole thing to do But he never raped her

Dull and problematic But mostly meh I still love Valek and the original group though RTC

  10. Amber Amber says:

This one was shaping up to be my favourite of Snyder's Glass series which I haven't been enjoying nearly as much as the Study series Opal the main character is just whiny and never seems to learn from her mistakes Still I was liking this one One of my favourite characters from the first book was back there was plenty of action and Opal finally seemed to be making some progress towards finding her place in the world and becoming an empowered young womanThen in the last 100 pages it just goes completely off the rails Sorry but having to endure two full chapters of male characters rendering Opal powerless and then gleefully describing how they and others are going to rape her is just gross It's also a complete deviation from the lighter tone and adventurous romp that was the earlier part of the book Finally having our main character decide at the end of the novel that her true love is a character who tortured her and raped her in the first book of the series just goes beyond tolerable Sorry my memory isn't that short and I don't appreciate the retcon or that fact that this is portrayed as a happy ending according to Opal her friends and family
