First I read The Real Lincoln A New Look at Abraham Lincoln His Agenda and an Unnecessary War by Thomas J DiLorenzo My review of that book is available on Goodreads includes the answer to the uestion Why on earth would you read that? Then I read Shattering the Truth the Slandering of Abraham Lincoln In it Dennis W Brandt does a fabulous job of painstakingly deconstructing the unfair misleading and downright false attacks made upon the Lincoln's legacy by DiLorenzo and his compatriots or should I say confederates in the anti Lincolnthe South was right crowdUnfortunately that crowd is large And unfortunately they sell a lot of books If you know anyone swayed by them this book is a good resource to use to add to your arsenal of facts If you can get them to read it you may just sway them backBrandt specifically focuses on DiLorenzo but throws in others for spice Focus is clearly necessary when errors are so abundant It takes 359 pages to partly show just how wrongheaded and agenda driven DiLorenzo is Brandt writes that he has hundreds pages of refutation and citation cut simply for space This book is long enough frankly about 90% longer than it needs to be to show that DiLorenzo is out of touch with the actual historyBrandt rebuts DiLorenzo in a variety of ways by refuting his logic by testing his sources and finding many of them not saying what DiLorenzo claims by providing context for cited words and events and by noticing reasoning built upon false or unsupported assumptions He also notes DiLorenzo's agenda and contradictions In short Brandt holds DiLorenzo to a standard of scholarship that a reader has the right to expect A standard that is apparently and unfortunately foreign to Thomas J DiLorenzo Only one thing keeps me from giving a five star review Brandt's work is good enough to deserve it and that is the plain fact that warranted frustration and understandable anger slip into the narrative from time to time Brandt spends most of the book writing from the high road but not always leaving himself and vicariously his position open to some criticism or doubt But the facts speak for themselves and anyone can look them up because Brandt appears never to miss a opportunity to footnoteReading these books I feel like I've been watching a debate I don't believe that the winners of the contest are debatable Dennis Brandt won But so did Abraham Lincoln and anyone who reuires their real history to be something that actually took place
