I enjoyed meeting Truman Smith and look forward to the next one He is as credible and honest, as entertaining as Mr Crider s other protagonist, the venerable Sheriff Dan Rhodes I have long enjoyed Sheriff Rhodes, and I m happy to add Truman to my list.

I found a pure private eye story and recommend it to all readers who want the good guy, the one who doubts himself, who is not part of local, state, or federal law enforcement or secret service. The story of Dead on the Island is well crafted with believable credible characters, although I thought Truman Smith Tru seemed to show a lack of enthusiasm, or maybe was just too blas in a couple of places But, he s likable and that s important and elieve it or not, a beach rat is a peripheral character But, with all of the fast paced thrillers these days with their overly enthusiastic crime solvers, maybe it just seemed that way I enjoyed learning bits of Galveston history included in the story. The story itself was evenly paced and I like how we learn at the beginning of the book Tru gave up searching for his missing sister after a year of looking and gives up on his abilities as an investigator he becomes a house painter and how that disappearance was left unsolved, leading me to wonder Crider s plan for that crime to be solved in some future book. Also, I like how an old friend appeared and asked Tru to help him find a missing girl, throwing Tru back into a danger from unsavory characters and his own demons. The girl, Sharon Matthews is the daughter of a prostitute, one who worked for Dino s uncle In the process of the Tru s investigation, Sharon s boyfriend is discovered murdered, Tru gets beaten when he leaves a night...

The first of the Truman Smith novels sets the stage Smith, a Private I who quit when he could not find what happened to his sister, a football hopeful whose chances were squelched when his knee took a bad hit, wants little from life He doesn t even want to name his cat He lives in Galveston, reads books, runs, and does odd jobs He is pulled back in when his old friend Dino, even of a shut in that Smith, asks Smith to find a missing girl Oddly, it was Dino who crippled Smith and wrecked his football career Dino and Ray, who has always taken a back seat to his football team friends, coax Smith back into the P I business It does not end well for many The Truman Smith novels are solid P.I tales, with a touch of humor in the background Crider got better as this series proceeded, when he got the feel of the characters locked in And character is the name of this game Crider is great at drawing realistic, somewhat eccentric, cha...

I had read many of of Bill Crider s reviews and articles before this book fell into my hands, coincidentally only a few months before the author died I assumed that any book he wrote would be equal in quality to his non fiction and I was not disappointed I liked this story well enough, but Truman Smith is quite a sullen character and his tragic backstory would make coming back to this series hard for me I know that the death of his sister Jan is going to b...

A very good readFun, though provoking and interesting characters I felt it was too easy to know the identity of the bad guy, and his motive, but a good story line anyway.

This is a great example of the pure PI type mystery Truman Smith has backed away from investigations after spending a year looking for his missing sister His rich, old high school friend pulls him back into detecting when he asks Tru for a big favor find his un acknowledged daughter born to one of his prostitutes Sharon grew up believing her father was gone, and not knowing that her teacher mother had once been a prostitute At first Tru believes Sharon has run away after learning the truth about her beginnings, but the Tue investigates, the he suspects something else is happening This is a good start to this series, leaving the missing sister as an opening for future books The story is told in first person, with Tru s voice There is quirky humor throughout the story especially Tru s friendliness with a rat as he runs along the Galveston, Texas waterways, bring it cheese to eat at one time Crider definitely got the atmosphere of Galveston The mystery kept me guessing as I got the ...

BOTTOM LINE 1 Truman Smith, PI, Galveston, Texas Tru s been hibernating since finally giving up on finding his missing sister a year ago, but comes out into the world to find another missing girl, as a favor to his old buddy Dino Smoothly written classic PI format, with nice bits of Galveston history layered in The characters are very good, and I liked Tru, although at times he s so laid back he seems like Rockford on valium And although the plotting was easily guessed, everything was well tied together and finished off by a fast moving and sad final scene Not the most powerful or scary PI story I ve ever read, bu...

Bill Crider s DEAD ON THE ISLAND introduces private detective Truman Smith I knew I would like Truman in the book s opening scene, which showed Tru s compassion toward a wild rat who lives near the beach where Truman goes for his morning run Tru has been working as a house painter and trying to recover from the loss of his sister, Jan, whose disappearance has not only left him grieving but doubting his abilities as an investigator When an old friend, Dino, asks for help to find a missing girl, Truman must overcome his own demons, as well as some dangerous and unsavory characters with an interest in keeping things hidden Crider s writing is p...
