I enjoyed this than Miss 5 but she liked the time travelling portal and that the protagonist is female I liked that it gave us an overview of Machu Picchu and Inca culture while being uite short and pictorialMiss 5 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library sometimes around particular topics or themes We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new favourite authors

The Christmas Challenge for 2012 via fiction fanatics included Plan your perfect 'Christmas trip' to your dream location Read a book set in that location I've always thought I'd love to go to Peru especially Machu Picchu so that's what I wrote on my list Finally a year later it was the only item left on the challenge and I simply had to find a book to read Happily Auckland Libraries has an excellent search function This book however is not the one I'm using to complete the challenge I wanted to have a novel and found one The Next One to Fall but it seemed like a good idea to have a look at this as wellThis is an attractive lesson for primary school children in archaeology and history The teacher is a young woman who has a device that sets up portals so she can travel to any time and place this is part of a series and here she goes briefly to 1911 to see Hiram Bingham discovering Machu Picchu and then to 1475 when it was a thriving Inca city The dialogue is a little stilted but gives us facts as do little text windows on some of the pages and it's bright and colourful with illustrations an integral part of the book

I've discovered several of the Isabel Soto adventures at our local library and I've borrowed all that I can find The stories are fun and the narrative is informative without being overly didactic This book discusses the people and culture of the Inca specifically those who lived at Machu Picchu the City in the Clouds Some of the fascinating aspects of the civilizaton are examined including the very precise construction techniues the precise positioning of Temples to align with celestial events like the solstices and some of the religious ceremonies The graphic novel format is entertaining and I love that Isabel is active daring and smart The book is not all that comprehensive but it does inform while also being an engaging tale These stories are uick reads and the illustrations really help tell the story
