The book is divided into two parts The first is a close reading of Kant's Groundwork and the second discusses different themes in Kant's ethical social and political philosophy In the first section Wood's main thesis is that friends and foes alike have gone wrong in putting the emphasis on the formula of universal law The lure of the formula is obvious it promises that there is a test that applied to any maxim will tell us whether it is moral but Wood argues that its derivation is fallacious the false negatives it gives are a direct inheritance of the fallacy in its derivation at most one positive duty can be derived from it and before all it has none of the alleged central place in Kant's ethical thought Instead Wood argues that the formula of humanity is Kant's formula of choice He discusses both formulas at length and the proceeds to a briefer discussion of the third formula Finally there is a discussion on Groundwork III which is less a close reading and a defense of a conseuential idea that Kantian ethics does not presuppose Kant's incompatibilist intuitions and hence does not rest on Kant's infamous metaphysics of freedomIn the second section Wood discusses different themes in Kant's thought such as his philosophy of history his account of teleological judgement his anthropology and his taxonomy of duties This discussions both clarify some points in the Groundwork eg his teleological argument about reason in the first section and explain how the Groundwork is related to other parts of Kant's practical philosophy especially his Metaphysics of Morals which the Groundwork is supposed to ground At some points seeing how Kant's ideas anticipate those of later thinkers particularly Karl Marx is illuminating and at some points which may or may not include points mentioned earlier it is easy to be persuaded how right was later commentators' decision to omit those parts from their discussions of Kantian ethics

One of the best commentary to Kant's Ethics Wood is a better than average scholar who offers a refreshingly insightful take on the subject Nevertheless he occasionally jams information down your throat In the end this book is a companion rather than an introduction
