His big sister teases Roosevelt for blushing a lot but his birdy pal Lombard offers words of encouragement Friends can be pretty awesome It was a so so story but I think Roosevelt and Lombard are fantastic names

I don't know why I keep giving Chris Raschka chances I just don't like his books The writing is so unbearably pretentious and I just can't see it appealing to children For adults with the euivalent of a literary stick up their ass fine But I'd hate to think there are people inflicting these books upon actual kidsThis book doesn't even make sense It's supposedly about a hippopotamus who blushes But he blushes seemingly continuously so the concept of blushing and why his sister gets her panties in a wad over it is unclear The sister is a bully constantly berating the younger hippopotamus for blushing when he falls over eats ice cream or counts things The little hippo doesn't even appear to blush; his pages have pinkish backgrounds which further obscures the concept of blushing and if kids don't already know what that means this book isn't going to help them figure it outThe text with its useless repetition is just as annoying as in some of Raschka's other books And the illustrations are the same rough uninspiring abstract kind I've seen in Crabby Crab and Arlene Sardine the two other Raschka books I've punished myself by readingI'm sorry but I just don't see the appeal I'm also confused as to why I keep picking these things up When will I learn my lesson?

My third kindle fire children's book The text and illustrations fit nicely together but the story failed to engage my 2 and 3 year old The flow of the words was not smooth and it was difficult to understand what was going onblushful was not an idea the toddlers understood for the first 3 screens So it failed to communicate effectively what the story was about The illustrations were difficult to understand as well My children prefer vibrant clear pictures to point at and to make comments about Hippos are always a favorite The pictures in this ebook were a bit abstract and in pastels Sometimes if the storyline is a little above the toddlers' attention span I would abbreviate and make up a storyline if the illustrations would hold their attention Unfortunately the story and the illustrations failed to hold their attention and mine

The idea behind this book is good but the execution is lacking The pictures are just okay but it's the story line that falters The big sister just keeps calling the little brother blushful but it's hard to tell what that is supposed to mean Is it an insult? It's not clear from the pictures or text why this is such a big deal Not really recommended

  5. Kelly Kelly says:

I didn't uite get why the hippo's sister was calling him 'blushful' The hippo in this story is many things as is pointed out by his bird friend but it just seems a bit off

  6. Beyond the Pages Beyond the Pages says:

What an adorably sweet book I enjoyed the simplicity of the message The author did a great job of contrasting the main character's sibling and the best friend One served as a discourager while the other was an encourager One spoke negatively about the little hippo and the other spoke positively I think what appealed to me most was the main character's response and level of confidence per interaction The artwork for this book depicted the story wellI received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley I was not reuired to write a positive review The words I have expressed are my own

  7. Paula Paula says:

Received a copy from NetGalleyThe book is about a little hippo whose sister is always making fun of him and being mean with her telling everyone he's always blushing This is not one of his better book The book felt flat even with all the colorful illustrations and simple text With some pushing kids may read it and the story line is good for those with pushy sisters or other people bullies etc and does send a positive message I just think they're better books than this that do that

  8. Samantha Samantha says:

A baby brother hippo wonders if his sister's statements about him are true She's the first person to comment when he makes a mistake or struggles to find an answer When in doubt the hippo turns to his friend whose assurances build the hippo up in the most positive wayWatercolor illustrations are excellent They do a great job of emohasizing what it feels like when older siblings try to define you I loved the way the brother and sister changed in size relative to one another as the story progressed PreK 2

  9. Heidi-Marie Heidi-Marie says:

Not at all what I thought this book would be like or about This seems to fit into something a parent would be looking for if their child has self esteem issues or you want to show how important a good friend is Or maybe even how not to be mean But it's certainly not a storytime book and probably isn't the best lap read either The pictures were back and forth for me And the attempts at humor were all right

  10. Elia Elia says:

Mean older sisters come in all shapes sizes and species I should know being one of them But as this book shows us love and friendship also come in all shapes sizes and species and despite the nay sayers it's totally ok to be exactly who you are even if who you are is an adorable hippo who turns bright pink at the drop of a hat
