An extremely flawed book written by an author who means well but who misunderstands what readers expect from true crime storytelling.I m sure Frank Stiles is a good detective, but he doesn t seem to know that you cannot write a book the way you write a police report In the acknowledgements, he thanks two journalists for their help with research information for this book I m not exactly sure what that means, but I wish he would ve just teamed up with one of these reporters and given them a co An extremely flawed book written by an author who means well but who misunderstands what readers expect from true crime storytelling.I m sure Frank Stiles is a good detective, but he doesn t seem to know that you cannot write a book the way you write a police report In the acknowledgements, he thanks two journalists for their help with research information for this book I m not exactly sure what that means, but I wish he would ve just teamed up with one of these reporters and given them a co author credit I admit that I went into this with low expectations because you can tell from the very amateur looking book cover that this was probably a rather amateur effort I knew Frank Stiles was a cop and not a professional writer or reporter But I m still really disappointed This story, about a string of abductions, rapes, and murders committed by two brothers in 1980s Toledo, Ohio, was of particular interest to me Toledo is my hometown, and some of these crimes were committed practically in my backyard There is renewed interest in these cases too because it s highly likely that the younger brother, Nathaniel, will be released from prison this year Unfortunately, this book suffers from an obvious lack of editorial guidance A crime reporter could have told Stiles that it s inappropriate and goes against journalistic standards to use words like attractive and pretty when referring to female victims They could have advised him against suggesting, however indirectly, that these murders are somehowsad or shocking because they happened to middle class or upper middle class victims from good families A developmental editor could have told him to nix the extraneous details that do not interest readers and do not further the story, such as describing every article of clothing a victim was wearing, right down to size of shoes They could have explained that there arecompelling details to pursue What was the Cook brothers relationship with each other like after Anthony was arrested After Nathaniel was arrested Did detectives sense that either one was trying to protect the other from arrest, prison Throw the other under the bus How did all of this affect the brothers family members There many holes that a seasoned reporter would not have failed to address A copy editor would have rid the manuscript of its countless grammatical errors, redundancies, and cliches It reads like the author did a careful self edit himself, ran spellcheck, and then went to print There s no way a qualified editor reviewed this I wonder if the manuscript even underwent any sort of legal review The author makes a few statements that feel like assumptions or conjecture things he could not know based on the information he had access to There s one thing Stiles could ve done to improve this book that doesn t require writing chops, though he could ve reached deeper to pull out some of thecomplex emotions he was having back then, while he investigated what he says were the most heinous crimes he d seen in his career He tells us he felt sickened, he felt sad, angry, and frustrated with lack of leads, but these feelings aren t unique to a person in this position trying to hunt down coldblooded killers After 240 pages, I don t have much of a sense of who Stiles is This is actually pretty important There s so muchI wanted to know about the policework side of this story It s a shame this book isn t much, much better, because the events it is based on are fascinating, tragic, and of great relevance to my community right now

The book was about the evil Cook brothers who killed a member of my in laws family The book is very factual and disturbing for those of us who live here in Toledo It is sadly a must read for those who live here to better understand Toledo s history and that we must always be vigilant Sadly, one of the brother is due to be realized soon which strikes fear into anyone s heart that has read this book.

This book is explained and told by the detective who spent countless hours hunting, tracking and living these nightmares He devoted much of his personal time and feels a sincere attachment to the victims and their loved ones.Mr Stiles, I was throughly intrigued with the reading and found I could not put the book down Thank you for your true and unwavering dedication in finding justice and bringing some closure to grieving families.
