This story follows the aftermath of the rebellion in the previous book Unfortunately where Sophie's Rebellion dragged the main character to and fro making her live the action in first person in this one Sophie is mostly contemplative and her time is spent either sitting in courtrooms or waiting for someone to explain to her what is happening Apart from one moment towards the end it seems that nothing the protagonists do actually changes anything or has any impact on their situation as exemplified from the downer ending I know it's an historical novel and its goal is to shine a light on a particular moment in history but that shouldn't be at the expense of the character's agency

  2. Kazia Kazia says:

A good book with a not uite a happy ending but a satisfying one or as much as one can be in such a situation The story is told through an innocent young girl who though young knows what is happening in this terrible time
