This book is a thorough exploration into the life death and teachings of Buddha based on the Pāli CanonI have to admit that this book is the first one for me to read on the topic of buddhism Therefore I will not judge the uality of the findings and claims of Herman Oldenberg but I will only express in modest way how I feel after reading it what I believe I've learned and some other aspects that I find importantFirst of all this being the first contact I have with such detailed description of Buddha and Buddhism I was a bit scared that I would be completely on my own fighting my way through many words that for me are completely foreign for example the concept of Ātman However Oldenberg was sure not to leave the reader alone and explained every concept in detail therefore making my read very pleasurable and helping me understand the main ideas He was writing the book by which he could introduce Buddhism to the general public and this also made his book very popular at his time and there is good reason for that Book comes well euipped with footnotes explanations sources and all these elements of well thought and scientific approach to writing I can never express enough my gratitude for such approachIn addition to that for some reason the book left me feeling very calm and somehow purified I attribute this to the way I connected to the concept of the Middle Way It is very peaceful wisdom oriented and stands as the opposite to the decadence of the world in which we live today It is like a poetical insight into the peaceful coexistence of all beings I'll close this review by saying that I do recommend this book but I was not looking for exact science or truth so I can not speak for the people who know Buddhism in depth But as a person who was trying to understand the colors of these teachings and add another view to my inner understanding of the world I came out uite satisfied
