  1. Vladimir Vladimir says:

The poem selection is uite good although some big names are missing like Juhász Ferenc for example and there aren't almost any living 21st century poets included The problem is not the selection however it's the translations they are sometimes OK rarely ever excellent and mostly ranging from bad to atrocious The editor says that the goal was neither the wholesale adaptation of the originals to the idiom of contemporary English language free verse nor the slavish reproduction of original sound patterns for reproduction's sake the business of the reproduction antiue dealer but the creation of faithfully and formally matched poems with their own life in English to produce poems that may be read convincingly across languages and epochs apparently this long sentence translates to adding parts of verses of freely interpreting them in translation Whereas I see how sometimes it must be impossible to translate something directly adding entire verses or changing their order sometimes borders on criminal in my opinion An especially unforgivable act of crime against Hungarian poetry is the complete butchering of Juhász's Anna örök by altering the rhythm of the poem and adding completely unnecessarily oh Anna in the last verse that was otherwise fine and easily translatable What's puzzling is that this poem is so easily translatable without losing much and somehow Szirtes managed to ruin it Maybe he just thinks he knows better than Juhász about what Juhász meant to sayHungarian poets deserve better than this
