The second book in the epic series Chaos and Retribution by Eric T Knight Sky Touched is just as great a read as the first book was The children Kerliss Fen and Aislin are touched by the sky stone and sea respectively and they are growing stronger in their powers even if still scared at what they do not understand and what singles them out within their communities and makes them different Kerliss seems to be really coping with his wind powers and harnessing the Ashanti to his will to protect his clan Fen on the other hand though older than the other two children is still terrified of his power and scared that it will turn him to stone and kill him as it did his father before him and Aislin knows she can ask anything from the sea it is her real mother but she is trying to come to grips with her human side and this is terrifying her I must admit I still find this character the most interesting and can feel her anger and empathise with her feelings when she is deprived of the sea which is her life blood The book leaves us in the lurch in all three strands of the children’s lives all three still do not know exactly what they are fighting against or that they should be united to fight the evil together I cannot just cannot wait to read the final book Sea Touched and maybe conclude this epic tale Eric hurry up and put me out of my misery please and launch book 3

Series Follows Three Characters Two Out of Three Ain't BadSo Karliss's story is solid He is developing as a character and has great supporting friends around him with their own personalities which contrast with his He learned his powers searches for knowledge and does interesting things Even Nergui the wagon drivers adds some dimension and contrast to his world Henta his enemy on the tribal council makes senseIhbarha his old mentor is dead and so Karliss has to grow up uickly to take over Ihbarha's responsibilities to the tribeKasai starts to grow his presence developing into an arch enemy that will span many stories before hopefully being overcomeKarliss develops his skills interacting with the aranti wind spirits They remain mysterious but are shown to be powerful and interesting The story shows Karliss being motivated then putting in tireless effort doing his homework and developing his skills He undertakes a dangerous uest to learn of his power and succeeds This supports his subseuent battles and demonstrations of growing powerThe fighting between the tribe and Kasai's agents is well described and dynamic A running battle and changes in tactics are well described The gray robed man arriving on the huge crow was mysterious and oozed power The struggle the tribe Karliss and his friends faced and overcame was visceralFen's story is uite different He doesn't have a mentor who understands his power and his guardian the fist seems to come under mind control leading him far off a path Fen can embrace There are real struggles between duty and following orders and the chain of command vs doing what he knows is right His stalwart friends and suad mates provide good contrast to his character as he developsFen is shown to develop spending countless hours over months going through grueling training wit his suad turning boys into men Fen only learns slowly of his power by getting attacked or put under extreme stress and then he doesn't really understand how or what happens other then figuring out its an earth related power His struggles with his developing relationship with Ravin simultaneously reveal other aspects of his character and provide motivation for some of the conflict to come He identifies his developing powers as a sickness that will lead to his death as he believes it lead to his father's deathThe Ankharan's arrive and provide clear enemies who aren't easily dealt with and things are further complicated when the First takes the Ankharan's as councillors and confidantes Fen and his suad mates have some weird intra dimensional travel investigating the ominous black ship the Ankharan's arrived on Things are pulled to a head when the Ankharan's capture Ravin intending on sacrificing her Fen is forced to use his power to rescue her from another weird intra dimensional space Truly creepy and well described challenge for Fen to overcomeAislin in contrast isa painful section of the book to read Yes we are being shown that she is truly alien and borderline psychopathic as she repeatedly over and over shows no compassion empathy or interest in other people Over and over some Demonstrating how immensely patient her guardian is over and over And Netra her guardian is a key character and world changer from books in the prior series reduced to an insecure parental figure who is worried she isn't loved Ugh Luckily they find Treylen who can take over some of the guardianship responsibilities and also explain why Aislin is the way she is Wish they would have found him 100 pages ago It was fun seeing Netra reunited with Cara but made you wonder why she hadn't made this journey and asked for help years ago Macht Rome domesticated was entertainingSo executing multiple story lines that come together over the course of multiple books is very challenging And the risk is that to be truly great for the reader all the story lines have to be enjoyable as they develop I've found Fen and Karliss's stories interesting and they progress at a nice pace But Aislin's is just not any fun at all bringing down the whole book for meAislin's story and the background characters around her do have the most knowledge of the prophecy and the three children needing to come together which does provide some useful development of the over arching story

45 stars for Sky Touched the second book in Eric T Knight's Chaos and Retribution series The preceding series Immortality and Chaos was outstanding enough that I moved right on to the continuation of the story in the new series One could read the Chaos and Retribution series as a standalone as it does provide a few explanatory references back to events in the original series but I think the reader's enjoyment would be richly served by starting at the beginning series Chaos and Retribution revolves significantly around three children living in different parts of the world and unaware of each other upon whom the fate of the world may depend The first book Stone Bound introduced all three with the bulk of the story about Fen a boy infused with the power of Stone Sky Touched moves the growth and development of all three but mainly focuses on Karliss who is imbued with the power of AirFen lives in the main city of a small nation and is largely unaware of his Stone power frightened by its early manifestations Aislinn imbued with the power of the Sea and Karliss born with Air power have been aware of their powers since birth Karliss's remote nomadic tribe of Sertithians has thousands of years of history identifying those with the ability to harness the power of air and wind and installing them as tlacti wind shaman of the tribe Karliss however is far powerful and advanced than any in their recent history Like the air spirits who influence him Karliss resisted the teachings of the tlacti to whom he was apprenticed wanting only to play and get into mischief The tlacti's shocking death throws Karliss into the position of tribe tlacti and the evolution of his struggles and spiritual growth in order to protect his tribe is traumatic and touchingAuthor Knight's ability to weave a uniue story was well on display in his Immortality and Chaos series but his capacity to develop characters into flesh and blood people that one truly cares about didn't come into play until well into the series In Chaos and Retribution Knight's character development roars to the front This is a beautifully involving story I care deeply about these children and look forward to seeing them grow up and face the world shattering cataclysm to come

When I started the first book in the Chaos and Retribution series Stone Bound I didn't realize it was a seuel to Immortality and Chaos So after reading the book instead of continuing with Sky Touched I decided to read the earlier series first as it obviously was all about the events that had led to what was happening to Karliss Fen and Aislin in Stone Bound And it was the best decision I could have made at that time as not only was Immortality and Chaos one of the best fantasy series I'd read in the last few years but also it gave me a deep understanding of the world in which the Chaos and Retribution series takes placeAnd now I'm back to the adventures of Aislin Karliss and Fen and again I can't recommend the book enough to anyone who loves great storytelling complex characters and masterful world buildingIn Stone Bound we were left with the children only starting to discover their powers now those powers are getting stronger every day And each of the kids has to learn to control theirs otherwise they may destroy those they love instead of saving the world as has been prophesizedKarliss the most carefree of the three in dramatic circumstances learns how to be responsible; Fen discovers that to love means to trust; Aislin the most mysterious of the children finally learns what it means to be human But the road to those discoveries is a difficult one and bad decisions have heartbreaking conseuencesAll three parts of the book are eually well written; they are suspenceful intriguing dramatic and extremelly moving especially Aislin's story Her journey to understanding human emotions and to the dicovery of what love is as well as Netra's emotional turmoil are masterfully depicted and deeply touch youAs it is the second book in a trilogy don't expect to get all the answers yet But do not let the cliff hanger stop you from jumping straight to part 3 you wouldn't stop reading The Lord of the Ring after The Two Towers would you?

Eric T Knight continues to deliver an exciting read In Sky Touched book 2 of the series Chaos and Retribution we find the three children Karliss Fen and Aislin maturing and growing in power Each child deals with growing up in their own way and each child deals with their connection to their sphere of power in their own way Fen tries to hide his power and fears it Karliss at times fears it but but mainly harness it and realizes it is not the toy he used for Aislin revels and immerses herself in the power of the sea It is very easy to find at least 1 if not 2 or all three children who you can relate to I can't wait for book 3 so I can see how they deal with the threats of Evil destruction reveal themselves even I received an advance review copy of this book

Good continuation of the story which feels episodic than serial with each of the characters advancing in their respective plotlines and getting a glimpse of their enemies it's not just one Aislin has finally come out of her shell if you'll excuse the pun and now joins Fen and Karliss in taking a stand against what's coming Looking forward to #3

This series is awesomeWhile usually jumping between different characters is disorienting this series draws you in and makes you feel for each one You can't help but follow along as if you are on a boat just following the tide I love it and can't wait for the third
