The book covers 50 years in 150 pages so it understandably has a rushed feel to it as years are skipped over between one paragraph and the next as Peters attempts to cram in the entirety of the War of the Roses into as short a space as possible There is a lot of telling rather than showing as various people sit in rooms and trade news and gossip It feels actually uite accurate for the time period especially since there is emphasis on the women left behind waiting for news than the men charging around the battlefield Still maddening in the lack of action and details as we are constantly hearing about events after the fact – and not just battles but events such as Anne Neville in hiding and Jane Shore’s part in the rebellion is heard about afterwards second hand When we get to the Princes in the Tower the culprit is left up in the air although possible twist on the second to last page as Elizabeth Woodville and the reader are both left wondering who the real villain was all along
