If this book was only about two people learning to deal with trauma, it d be great It s written in such a way it s hard to put down There are some really great scenes of two people working through emotional baggage together But this is supposed to be a mystery and a crime novel I was at the 29% mark before Martie even suspects Seth of maybe killing pedophiles Then her suspicion is immediately dropped because he s a damaged soul who couldn t have done it I couldn t get much further because If this book was only about two people learning to deal with trauma, it d be great It s written in such a way it s hard to put down There are some really great scenes of two people working through emotional baggage together But this is supposed to be a mystery and a crime novel I was at the 29% mark before Martie even suspects Seth of maybe killing pedophiles Then her suspicion is immediately dropped because he s a damaged soul who couldn t have done it I couldn t get much further because there was no plot happening It was all lovey dovey eyes and details about the food they were making Which would have been fine if that was the plot The plot is supposed to be about a serial killer, but that was a footnote to new romance The book I read was not the book I was promised from the blurb It could have been half the length and still enjoyable It was well written though The author is talented, but it wasn t for me

A solid read that I quite enjoyed, and I don t normally read romance I found myself very sympathetic towards the characters and really wondering how things would resolve for them given their personal struggles and issues I highly recommend it I especially enjoyed the witty banter between the couple.

I received a complimentary proof copy of What the Chat Dragged In to review I thought it would be the usual read it, make some notes then write an honest but nice review to let people know what to expect That was my plan before I opened the file to start reading on a Sunday afternoon I literally couldn t stop reading this book Dirty dishes stayed in the sink, work clothes didn t get washed for Monday morning, and my husband was deserted for most of the day Okay, it could be that he was I received a complimentary proof copy of What the Chat Dragged In to review I thought it would be the usual read it, make some notes then write an honest but nice review to let people know what to expect That was my plan before I opened the file to start reading on a Sunday afternoon I literally couldn t stop reading this book Dirty dishes stayed in the sink, work clothes didn t get washed for Monday morning, and my husband was deserted for most of the day Okay, it could be that he was parked on the couch all afternoon watching sports didn t notice, but I usually sit beside him for a while keeping him company, knitting or reading.I cannot pin down exactly what genre to put this book in It s a quirky romance, it s a witty mystery, it s a foodie book, it s a crime novel, it s a little bit of a police procedural, there s elements of Christian fiction, it deals with non combat PTSD This is not entirely an easy novel to read because even though it s fiction we know that the evil that is a main character actually exists in our world.Martie is an FBI agent who has seen far too much in her career hunting pedophilesand Seth is the adult survivor of a vicious pedophile So you would think there s no way this romance can go far, right Talk about clashing needs But Cyn Mackley makes this work Makes the reader believe that people badly damaged by this evil can heal, can move on, can find a little corner of sanity in this insane world I laughed out loud at some of the interactions between Martie Seth, and smiled often They came off the page and started living in my brain I like these people. And there were things in this book that made me cry.Pedophilia is a main character Some people might call it a plot mechanism but not I Ms Mackley is good at carefully choosing her descriptions so that it never gets too graphic, yet at the same time paints images that will not easily leave you And she shows clearly how it is never really over in the lives of those who have been damaged by pedophilia It s an ever present part of reality for survivors and those who love them, and Cyn Mackley shows that brilliantly without preaching There is a mystery threaded through Chat also Oh and wait til you meet Chat I like that the mystery is solved but not 100% resolved by the last page I especially like that there will be a sequel.Compelling, well rounded characters, lots of humor of several varieties, the mystery of child predators suddenly dying that had me saying No don t let it be this character or that character doing it , loving families and horrifying families, sympathetic and yet matter of fact handling of PTSD, great recipe ideas, interesting tidbits of info about their jobs without too much trivia, useful information to try to protect our children.this novel has so much going for it I rarely give 5 stars, but What the Chat Dragged In merits it I can hardly wait for the sequel

surprised by how good this book isI never write reviews Not for any other reason than I just read too many books and it cuts into my reading time That being said, this was recommended to me by a friend of the author and even though I was leery read dreading of having to give her an honest opinion, I truly couldn t put it down at times I work in child welfare and have to read medical reports on the most vile instances of child abuse and human trafficking happening in my community and I c surprised by how good this book isI never write reviews Not for any other reason than I just read too many books and it cuts into my reading time That being said, this was recommended to me by a friend of the author and even though I was leery read dreading of having to give her an honest opinion, I truly couldn t put it down at times I work in child welfare and have to read medical reports on the most vile instances of child abuse and human trafficking happening in my community and I can attest that it s realistically presented in this novel It is in every town and community The author expresses a fascinating, compassionate look into life after abuse The protagonists are unique and have such depth that I don t often find in today s novels I didn t give it 5 stars because typos drive me up the wall though I know that sof an issue of the editor and not the author And for the record, it s could NOT care less Yeah, yeah I know that s a tad petty but Anyway I highly recommend this book

I try to choose books that don t have a ton of reviews, thereby helping Indie authors I usually enjoy the books, sometimes I have my socks knocked off What the Chat Dragged In knocked my socks clean across the room, though they were still dirty when they landed Written in the first person, which I love, I was drawn into Martie s world and pulled along for the ride I found myself rooting and hoping for her to land on her feet I love this book and I can t wait until the next one in the series I try to choose books that don t have a ton of reviews, thereby helping Indie authors I usually enjoy the books, sometimes I have my socks knocked off What the Chat Dragged In knocked my socks clean across the room, though they were still dirty when they landed Written in the first person, which I love, I was drawn into Martie s world and pulled along for the ride I found myself rooting and hoping for her to land on her feet I love this book and I can t wait until the next one in the series comes outwell, ok I do have a long to read list but I d make room for the next one if it popped up tomorrow.I highly recommend this book as a mystery that has depth and growth of character in it It does deal with PTSD which is a part of my life, though for different reasons than in the story but Mackley s treatment of it is on point and her characters reactions are also.I d read it again if I had time In fact maybe I ll make time

Worth itThis is the second book I ve read by this author and I liked them both That s surprising because they have a bit of a Christian slant and I usually avoid these Here it is not intrusive and it is part of the story. The ending is satisfying and I m looking forward to the next book.Unless you have a strong anti Christian bias this book is worth your time.
