I pulled this ebook from the library after really enjoying The Tattoo Shop Mystery series by the same author I figured it was worth a try even though Secondhand Smoke wasn t the first in this series Well, I can confirm that Karen E Olson is not a one hit wonder when it comes to mystery series and I am on the hunt for Book 1 already The lead character, Annie Seymour, is different from most protagonists in several ways she s older, closing in on her forties her career as a reporter is fading I pulled this ebook from the library after really enjoying The Tattoo Shop Mystery series by the same author I figured it was worth a try even though Secondhand Smoke wasn t the first in this series Well, I can confirm that Karen E Olson is not a one hit wonder when it comes to mystery series and I am on the hunt for Book 1 already The lead character, Annie Seymour, is different from most protagonists in several ways she s older, closing in on her forties her career as a reporter is fading, not just starting and she knows the victims of the crime but isof an outsider with a minimal stake in its resolution until the end I would expect these factors to weaken the plot but this author uses them instead to build the conflict and tension The mystery itself had lots of twists and turns, and you were never sure who were the good guys and who were the bad But the plot was also clearly intended to drive the revelations about Annie s personality I can see lots of opportunities for emotional growth with this character as the series continues and I m keen to go along for the ride I will warn readers that Annie does have quite a potty mouth so if you are sensitive to bad language, this may not be for you There are references of sexual activity but none on the page

I like the characters and hard edged, cynical approach in this series over her cozy tattoo shop mysteries, but the resolution to this one seemed to drag on Her writing style and dialogue are top notch.

Foul mouthed reporter Annie Seymour not only writes the news but also makes the news in this enjoyable mystery set in New Haven, CT When a favorite Italian eatery goes up in flames, Annie is quickly on the scene to write the story But she also gets sucked into an arson murder case that leaves her looking behind her shoulder and dodging bullets Since I used to live in New Haven, it was fun to revisit old haunts like Claire s, Wooster Square, and even the Q Bridge.

I love Annie Seymour She is a newspaper reporter who is great at her job, but has a pile of dirty clothes and an empty refrigerator at home She is fearless when hunting down the facts of a story, but afraid to commit in a relationship I found her very likable even when she is being unlikable and totally relatable I am looking forward to the next book.
