First off so that readers do not get confused as I did , this is not part of the children s series Go Girls It s part of a different series with a similar name Go Girls Chronicles The other thing is each book in The Go Girls Chronicles can be read as a stand alone story as they each feature a different girl and sport In Race Girl , as you can guess from the cover the sport is Equestrian and Horse riding Those young tweens and teens that live in New Zealand and Australia, will love Race G First off so that readers do not get confused as I did , this is not part of the children s series Go Girls It s part of a different series with a similar name Go Girls Chronicles The other thing is each book in The Go Girls Chronicles can be read as a stand alone story as they each feature a different girl and sport In Race Girl , as you can guess from the cover the sport is Equestrian and Horse riding Those young tweens and teens that live in New Zealand and Australia, will love Race Girl as it is set at the heart of the biggest racing event in the Southern Hemisphere the Melbourne Cup Where the best of the best horses from around the two countries come and compete to win the title One of those female jockeys that won the title was Michelle Payne This book features Tully Athens who is sixteen years old and dreams of winning the Melbourne Cup and being amongst one of the few females to win When her dad s horse business starts to lose money to their competition , Tully decides that it s time she stops sulking around since her mother died she hasn t been on a horse in six months and focus on not only her dreams once again but also of saving her family farm During this time , she falls in love with the competition a boy named Brandon Weston His family are the one s who are putting hers out of business and wants to buy the Athens farm Both have dreams of winning the Melbourne Cup, but of course there can only be one winner Will this race not only destroy their friendship and forbidden romance or will it be the race that will pull the families together to work as one in order to win Personally, I found Race Girl to be a bit of a struggle to read as I normally like fast paced novels and I found the writing style of Race Girl to be at a slow pace than I am used to However, I believe if you are aged 9 14 years old , then you will really enjoy Race Girl by Leigh Hutton

I received a free digital copy of this book from the publishers author via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.Tully Athens dreams of being a jockey just like her mother But due to a tragic accident that claimed her mom s life, Tully is both scared to ride a horse again, and dissuaded from doing so by her dad When they come close to losing the family farm, Tully finally musters the courage to race again even if her father is against it.This book had a lot of great potential, and I did I received a free digital copy of this book from the publishers author via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.Tully Athens dreams of being a jockey just like her mother But due to a tragic accident that claimed her mom s life, Tully is both scared to ride a horse again, and dissuaded from doing so by her dad When they come close to losing the family farm, Tully finally musters the courage to race again even if her father is against it.This book had a lot of great potential, and I did enjoy just the general horsiness of the book, and the bond between horse and rider I don t know a whole lot about the horse racing world, so I love books that give me a glimpse into the inner workings of the behind the scenes show However, this book fell into so many horse book cliches I swear I could hear my eyes rolling at what was happening so many times And not just that, but the romance in the book took over at many points and it was so quick and laughable Tully basically fell in love with the guy after a five second meeting and then was heartbroken for over a year when all they d done was share a brief kiss and a few texts COME ON.The first 40% of this book was really slow to get moving, and didn t really contain much horse racing or anything as Tully really quickly became consumed with her crush and it was sooo boring I almost DNF d it several times Then it picked up when she began her apprenticeship as a jockey and I really enjoyed that part but then the timeline seemed to go on double speed and we raced through so many events and all of a sudden her apprenticeship was over and it was just a bit too quick I would have likedtime to live in that world. There were a few events that happened in the last 10 20% of the book that were so ridiculous it made me laugh out loud Like literally so many things went wrong at the same time, it was unbelievable when just one of these things would have been enough to carry the story to the end.I think there was potential here, and in terms of editing I think this is self published , I didn t see any glaring errors such as grammar or spelling that would normally annoy me But the entire story as a whole needed a lottightening and focus, and I think a lot could have been scrapped for the benefit of the plot

Review posted on The Warlock s Gray Book Can I get a hell yeah for this amazing story of victory, determination, adventure, love and loss Ok, so I ll start with the negative, and end with the positive, alright I didn t expect much from this book, but one of the things I did hope to have was fast paced, heart racing action, horse races that would shatter my mere reading experience and turn me into a witness to the Melbourne Cup Unfortunately, as you probably guessed, it wasn t so Even t Review posted on The Warlock s Gray Book Can I get a hell yeah for this amazing story of victory, determination, adventure, love and loss Ok, so I ll start with the negative, and end with the positive, alright I didn t expect much from this book, but one of the things I did hope to have was fast paced, heart racing action, horse races that would shatter my mere reading experience and turn me into a witness to the Melbourne Cup Unfortunately, as you probably guessed, it wasn t so Even the beginning was dull, and if I wasn t reading this book for a purpose, I would have started reading it diagonally I found Race Girl to be slower paced than what I would have liked from this book, but I do understand why it s not a novel about horse racing, it s a novel about a horseback rider who has to overcome obstacles And yet, even though I know that already, I m still just a tiny bit disappointed However, Hutton has a great way of writing that makes readers feel like they re in the action During the races, I could have sworn that I was on a horse So that was a real winner The main character, Tully, didn t appeal to me, at first She literally cried in every chapter LITERALLY Seriously, I couldn t stand her But, the book spans over 2 years, and we get to see an amazing character development Tully becomes a mature young woman, caring and strong, forged through hard struggles I really liked her at the end, as she finally became worthy of being the protagonist I didn t have much thought about Brandon, but their relationship was quite charming The romance was cute, but thankfully, it didn t take up too much space It stayed in the background, and just added to the sweetness of the story. As usual, I love it when an author does research for their novel Hutton was obviously a connoisseur about horseback riding, and horse races, and, from what I garnered about her other works, adventure sports in general The bits that actually taught me anything about horseback riding were a joy to read, along with the bits about the riders themselves I expected to learn about horses, and I did All in all, Race Girl is a very sweet story about a horse rider who overcomes difficulties and fights for what she loves Although it struck meas a young reader s story, I still recommend it if you are looking for a simple but feel good book

Leigh has a knack for making you feel like you are there amongst it, in the middle of the action with her characters The on track descriptions in this book are brilliant you really do feel as if you are riding the horses I could give five stars just for the Race Scenes You find yourself tearing through the words, like a horse tearing up the turf as it thunders down the track. We meet Tully Athens out on her family s farm in rural Queensland After the tragic death of Tully s mother in a hor Leigh has a knack for making you feel like you are there amongst it, in the middle of the action with her characters The on track descriptions in this book are brilliant you really do feel as if you are riding the horses I could give five stars just for the Race Scenes You find yourself tearing through the words, like a horse tearing up the turf as it thunders down the track. We meet Tully Athens out on her family s farm in rural Queensland After the tragic death of Tully s mother in a horse racing accident the family s farm has fallen on hard times and is wasting away I found Tully immediately likeable The then Fifteen year old is struggling to cope with her mother s death She is afraid to get back on a horse after the accident, but her soul is missing riding as much as it is missing her mother After finally getting the courage to mount up again she finds herself riding, then racing side by side with a mysterious hot boy who can really ride The fun begins when she finds out the stranger is in fact Brandon Weston the son of her families biggest rival Ah forbidden love my favorite. This the third installment of the Go Girl Chronicles doesn t disappoint, as with the previous two books we get drama, action, romance, a strong female protagonist, beautiful horses, studly men, lessons learnt, dreams followed and inner strength found. There are even nods to Jump Girl, Rev Girl and next up, Surf Girl cracked me up, especially when Clover pops up in the same hospital room as Tully. We go on to see Tully develop into a loving and caring, yet strong and determined young woman of eighteen We see her fight for the things she loves and make her mark on the world. There is a lot of story crammed into this book, but Leigh has managed to keep it all fast paced and flowing well I only wish we could have got to spendtime seeing Brandon and Tully s love develop. The last quarter of this book is a whirl wind of twists and turns and fast racing I can t say muchthen that without giving the best parts away imagine me doing a cheeky wink here Three cheers and FIVE STARS for Race Girl Tully
