though the characters are versatile enough that the roles are often reversed They make dry jokes with impeccable comic timing seriously, if a joke seems bad or generic here, look at the deliveryclosely about games, gamers, playing games, themselves, the game industry, game culture, and sometimes just what s on their mind.Jerry and Mike were very possibly the first two successful self made writers in gaming, emerging right on cue from a world where everyone had only gotten their vidgie game media in once monthly periodicals However, they acted not only as a news source this was already thing in the early days of the popular web but also as iconoclastic watchdogs willing to look that big mysterious industry in the eye, and often spitting in its face Before them, there was nothing in periodicals willing to have a discussion with fans about all bullshit of the culture, which couldn t come from the enthusiast press of all the leading magazines at the time None of this was done self consciously, but rather delivered as a part of the sincerity that you get by walking into an apartment with two guys whose private tastes and passions happen to be brilliant. Not only is their irreverence important, it is what gives the comic its character Some of that irreverence is losing its luster in today s strips they re still going as of 2015 , but that s only because the industry has a transparency now that the press has many blogs and websiteswilling to talk about the bullshit, and a 100 forum posters for each article That s not to say they re not worth reading, however Gabe and Tycho s veteran status of the industry puts them at the heart of all the important changes and events, and still comes with insightful observations, as well as many other rewards that don t have to do with this book It would be a huge mistake to say that they represented every gamer, but anybody who understood why it wasn t a waste of time to play, think, and otherwise surround themselves with games could have found validation here, if not necessarily in the lack of political correctness or even sense of humor Even though you can read all of these comics online for free, this collection is worthy to have if you are interested in Tycho s verbose reflections, written in 2006 It s hard to say if it requires generosity to look back four years on these, but Tycho seems to write with equal parts pride, self deprecation, and excitement at the prospect of talking about the outcome of the games or people they skewered On Hideo Kojima, and his some faux narcissistic tendencies He actually seems like a very nice man, and he invented Solid Snake, so hey He recently started a blog, wherein he chronicled the pervading melancholy of winter Any man who chronicles the melancholy of winter is okay in my book Page 30, March 30 2001 On a Microsoft comic, in possibly the shortest I m not even sure I remember which evil act Microsoft was being blamed for this time page 31 There are millions of words written by Tycho, and I suspect he is not given the credit Mike is, as people who spend a minute on a hit comic from a website they don t frequent are not likely to want to indulge in thick prose He has a dry, unpredictable and hilarious, writing style that is just as entertaining, if notso than the comic itself, but can be incredibly dense and even literary compared to standard language His meandering use of metaphors, irony and sarcasm, often juxtapose the absurd, ridiculous and base with a flippant intellectualism that will leave many a laughter ending in wait, what did I just read He is a master of language and an inspiration and provides the backbone for the duo Not every strip is funny some jokes are cliches and just funny because of the delivery, and the limited scope might turn some off Some might not appreciate the context, where today every website and its grandma is willing to treat the industry as an equal, that will remove some of the implicit humor in many strips This collection in particular gets five stars, however, because 2001 2002 were some of my favorite years to be a gamer, and I think it is an ideal introduction to Penny Arcade, though I suppose that partially depends on which year you were most nostalgic for PA also had an energy to it that has faded with time, coming in cycleslike, butoften relegated to the other projects and responsibilities that surround them I am not entirely sure if I liked the games themselves, but as a child 2001 wasof an awakening into the fact that they appealed a little too much to me, and I was probably just becoming conscious to that wide, wide, kingdom that the PA boys act still as jester to

Holkins and Krahulik continue their crusade to bring down the immodest giants of the video gaming industry with their scathing and precisely delivered comic strips. This second volume collects strips from 2001 and also includes other early non PA comic enterprises from the duo and several news post threads from the keyboard of Holkins that chronicle thememorable events of that year Unfortunately, this means that none of the original news posts about the comics themselves are included, whic Holkins and Krahulik continue their crusade to bring down the immodest giants of the video gaming industry with their scathing and precisely delivered comic strips. This second volume collects strips from 2001 and also includes other early non PA comic enterprises from the duo and several news post threads from the keyboard of Holkins that chronicle thememorable events of that year Unfortunately, this means that none of the original news posts about the comics themselves are included, which is a shame Sure, much of the game related news may be very dated now, but Holkins delivery could make the most ancient and irrelevant of topics a highly entertaining read, and readers who do not travel back through the online archives are missing out on a trove of great wit and additional contextual jokes.Gabe and Tycho are still finding their footing here, but even at their shakiest they outclass any other comic on the web in terms of bravado and hilariosity
