Objectively speaking this book is a great story with lots of a suspenseful plot, great twists, an impressive conspiracy theory regarding the world of HEMA practitioners, has very nice character descriptions, very nicely scripted moments and some absolutely amazing action scenes. However the whole of the story bleeds heavily from plot holes around 70% in the story, almost feeling like it was rushed to finish It ends up feeling like a holywood movie that at some point lacked the resources to suppo Objectively speaking this book is a great story with lots of a suspenseful plot, great twists, an impressive conspiracy theory regarding the world of HEMA practitioners, has very nice character descriptions, very nicely scripted moments and some absolutely amazing action scenes. However the whole of the story bleeds heavily from plot holes around 70% in the story, almost feeling like it was rushed to finish It ends up feeling like a holywood movie that at some point lacked the resources to support a fully balanced plot structure until the end.As a book I would give it a 3.5, but here comes the subjective part of the review. As a person who practices HEMA and REALLY loves it, this book hit a very soft spot in my heart and kept my interest up until the end The writer even uses actual stances names and manages to describe every sword action moment with precise detail and allows a reader who knows a few things about HEMA to get an absolutely unique experience of reading and get successfully emotionally connected with the main character Thus I give this book a 4.5 5 and i would still recommend it to every HEMA practitioner I know and not only

Michael Edelson writes great action stories, and there certainly are plenty of action scenes in this story Great plot flow and characters you ll love to either really like or really hate I loved the relationship between Jack and Francesca and the fact that I now know something about fencing and how to save a limp LOL There s a little bit of language and a bit of gore, so I you find that offensive, you might want to choose one of his other books I was wavering between a four and five star ra Michael Edelson writes great action stories, and there certainly are plenty of action scenes in this story Great plot flow and characters you ll love to either really like or really hate I loved the relationship between Jack and Francesca and the fact that I now know something about fencing and how to save a limp LOL There s a little bit of language and a bit of gore, so I you find that offensive, you might want to choose one of his other books I was wavering between a four and five star rating for David Harper at first, but by the end of the book, he had me convinced he was a five He has a pleasant voice, and his accents for the various character is terrific His recording quality is perfect I d listen to his books again If you haven t read a Michael Edelson book, you re missing out

This was a very enjoyable read The story reminds me of a cross between Bloodsport and sword fighting with a shadow of Johnny Cage from Mortal Kombat the movie. The main character here is a longsword fighting instructor who runs his own school and makes ends meet, but ultimately starts wondering if his life has been a trivial pursuit An invitation to an underground swordfighting tournament adds some intrigue as well as an opportunity for the character to discover whether his heart truly accept This was a very enjoyable read The story reminds me of a cross between Bloodsport and sword fighting with a shadow of Johnny Cage from Mortal Kombat the movie. The main character here is a longsword fighting instructor who runs his own school and makes ends meet, but ultimately starts wondering if his life has been a trivial pursuit An invitation to an underground swordfighting tournament adds some intrigue as well as an opportunity for the character to discover whether his heart truly accepts swordfighting as way of life or a hobby. The characters felt very real and the combat was extremely well written The author knows the actual techniques, has tournament experience himself, and it shows in the storytelling I think he walks the line well as far as balancing the technical details with a basic description of what s happening Maybe it would be a bit too far in the weeds for some people who are unfamiliar, but I thought it stayed clear. This was a great read and I d recommend it for anyone looking for a character tale that also has some of the most if not THE most realistic swordfighting you can find in fiction

I can see how people who are into historical fencing would be just over the moon about this book And even though I m not part of that scene at all and don t know the vocabulary, I enjoyed it All the German and Japanese terms aren t too bad you can still mostly get what s going on I also watched a few YouTube videos just so I had some general images in my head One thing that irked me though was that, view spoiler hello Y all are about to risk your lives in a live steel tournament Sto I can see how people who are into historical fencing would be just over the moon about this book And even though I m not part of that scene at all and don t know the vocabulary, I enjoyed it All the German and Japanese terms aren t too bad you can still mostly get what s going on I also watched a few YouTube videos just so I had some general images in my head One thing that irked me though was that, view spoiler hello Y all are about to risk your lives in a live steel tournament Stop drinking whiskey, having sex, and playing tennis, and start taking this seriously already Sheesh There s no way Jack and Freddie, at least, could have been in top form hide spoiler But overall a good plot, serviceable writing, and an engaging story. But a major theme of this book is power and its relationship to being able to kill people, and to risking your own life And this is where I just couldn t really get on board I even went back and reread the first half of Chapter 23 and it didn t particularly help view spoiler I agree with some points e.g it s definitely not an improvement in society to have anyone be able to buy a gun without really facing the issues involved in killing someone, compared to ages in whichpeople were specifically trained in sword fighting And I ll even grant that it s good for leaders to really have a realistic idea of what happens when they send other people into danger But I wouldn t go from there to if the men and women who control society are so fundamentally different from those who built it, then are we not doomed to unmake what we have inherited What about evolving into something better that s not quite so death based I also have trouble imagine this actually trickling up from the martial arts community to influencing world leaders, even with the support of the Talhoffer Society There s a pretty hand wavy step two in there And I was disappointed that the climax of the plot was a revenge killing that was basically sanctioned all around It s one thing to approve of being able to face death, and even causing it when necessary, but that requires clarity in determining when it is in fact necessary And the fact that everyone just automatically went along with well, he tried to kill her, so you definitely have to kill him, just didn t feel right And Jack kept annoyingly spacing out during the parts of the story where we might have heard if there were any penalties in place for people like Junichi who took the competition into the realm of actual deliberate violence Does the Society already have a process for this Do we have to have another killing hide spoiler I will make another interesting note about the experience of reading it, though I had to really pay attention to the fight scenes in a new way Because the whole point is for people to face what actually happens with real swords, I couldn t just let typical movie scenes run in my mind I had to slow down and deliberately trust the author by imagining exactly what he describes, and that was an interesting exercise

This is MUST read for any HEMA practitioner and martial artist It hammers really good moral points about the fine line between art and survival combat The fights are great and the character development is really good Overall the writing is very above the average level However I do have some issues with the plot, mainly the setting that at some point goes out of the improbable to the completely imaginary and ruins the sober tone of the book a bit Also it suits the need of the author at the e This is MUST read for any HEMA practitioner and martial artist It hammers really good moral points about the fine line between art and survival combat The fights are great and the character development is really good Overall the writing is very above the average level However I do have some issues with the plot, mainly the setting that at some point goes out of the improbable to the completely imaginary and ruins the sober tone of the book a bit Also it suits the need of the author at the end to tailor the conclusion of the book, which could have beenrealistically written, and still contain enough drama The last thing I have qualms with is that it deals with murder like it is something you can get away with, and it does seem like it is the choice that is supported I do not have issues with murder in self defense or for the protection of ones family and friends, however the overall tone this is presented could have pointed this better in my opinion

Edelson has created an engaging, thoughtful treatise on martial arts wrapped in a compelling plot with well fleshed out characters His technical descriptions of fight scenes paint a vivid picture and yet don t bog down the action, which is fluid and exciting It also has a surprising amount of heart and beauty for a book about people hacking at each other with swords You may think you know where this book is going you don t If you re interested in martial arts, read this book.If you like s Edelson has created an engaging, thoughtful treatise on martial arts wrapped in a compelling plot with well fleshed out characters His technical descriptions of fight scenes paint a vivid picture and yet don t bog down the action, which is fluid and exciting It also has a surprising amount of heart and beauty for a book about people hacking at each other with swords You may think you know where this book is going you don t If you re interested in martial arts, read this book.If you like swords, read this book.If you like action, read this book.If you want a compelling plot, read this book
