This is the first book in a new series about the Vancouver Vice, an AHL hockey team that suffers from an image problem and has a host of other things to deal with, including being the last placed an image problem and has a host of other things to deal with, including being the last placed team in the league Their coach is a jerk, their owner is hands off, and their players are a mix of good and not so good guys But this story that deals with the tryouts for the team features one of the good ones best to start with a hero, after all Eric is a player who used to have it all, then squandered his chances at making the NHL after a drunk driving accident he was responsible for resulted in a lot of other issues and him getting kicked off his team at the time Finally coming to grips with the problems in his life, he s made a turnaround, spending a year playing in Switzerland, getting his mind and body back into the right mode needed to realize his dreams At the start of the story he s been given a last chance ticket to attend the tryouts for the Vancouver Vice and is at an expensive training camp with six weeks to get into peak physical form While there, he meets a rather mysterious woman at a bar one night, one he just can t get out of his head The pursuit is on, eventually resulting in Eric and Josie becoming lovers and friends in that order But Eric has a lot on his plate, and a relationship with a new woman may or may not help him in his quest to better his chances at moving up the hockey ladder With a lousy coach, the demons of his past, and a new relationship, can Eric find the right path to realize his dreams What a fascinating story It s a hockey romance, sure, but it s a lotthan that, as we go with Eric on his path of self discovery I really enjoyed how the book started, the training camp that Eric attended and its focus on mind and body a great reminder that the psychology of sport is as important as its physicality The story is told entirely from Eric s point of view, so we know his past, his present and what he hopes to achieve in the future Eric himself is in a good place now, both mentally and physically He s a practitioner of yoga and meditation He works himself hard physically to keep in shape He s acknowledged the mistakes of his past and faces up to them in a mature and honest manner As a result of his driving under the influence charge, he has a breathalyzer installed in his car, a device he must blow into that records the percentage of alcohol before he is able to drive and obviously would lock him out if he was over the limit It s a sobering reminder for him daily of the chances he used to take and the responsibilities he has to himself and his teammates As the story progresses, Eric has decisions to make and conflicts to resolve It was refreshing to see him deal with everything in a mature manner I just really liked him as a character. The romance part of the story was a little bit different than any I d read before, mostly because Josie s character remains an enigma through much of the story She comes across as a very contained woman, not expressive emotionally The first few times that she and Eric meet, you get the feeling that she really doesn t care much whether or not she and Eric will ever be in a relationship Though it s obvious that this is something Eric wants, Josie is muchclosed off and doesn t share her feelings with him This doesn t stop them from having some super steamy scenes together though, and while the sex between them is definitely hot, it s not until later in the story that you getof a sense that Josie cares for Eric, in her actionsthan in her words She s definitely a positive presence in his life though, a good listener for him and a woman who asks him the questions that no one else does Josie s got some secrets too, ones we don t find out about until later on There are some things that happen in the story, interesting twists and turns that I didn t see coming and that definitely made this a real page turner for me I really wanted to know what would happen, not just with Eric and Josie but also with Eric s hockey career We get a good happy for now ending appropriate for Eric s age at 23, and the fact this reads as a new adult story and I m definitely interested in readingof this series 4.5 stars. In the morning, I woke up early Josie was lying beside me, and I got up on one elbow to stare at her She looked beautiful It was like she was this talisman for me I could relax when she was around.Everyone thought that I was pretty laid back But I had this constant low grade worry about the future, specifically my hockey future Right now, things were great because I was training hard and the only pressure was to get into better shape But in a couple of weeks, I d be at the Vice training camp The pressure would be amped up then Even the idea was starting to twist up my stomach.I slipped out of bed and pulled on sweats and a t shirt I grabbed my flip flops and wallet, then went out into the backyard I stretched slowly, and then moved into a sun salutation This was the best time of day, when the sun was rising and the neighbourhood was quiet It was getting colder though, and the leaves were turning golden shades and falling Then I sat down to meditate Time to quiet my worries I closed my eyes and concentrated on my breathing, on the sunlight on my eyelids, and on the peace I was still feeling Calm.Once I was finished my meditation, I put on my sandals and tucked my wallet in my pocket I walked briskly to this nearby bakery We had found it one evening when Josie got sugar cravings after I made her dinner. When I got back inside with a paper bag of pastries, the bed was empty and the drawer where I d stashed her stuff was slightly ajar Shoot How like her to take off I had been looking forward to spending the morning with her. Then I heard a voice in the bathroom Cat, you are weird The bathroom door opened Misty exited first and then Josie She was dressed, and towelling her hair dry She smiled at me, and I grinned back Misty watched me shower too, Josie said.Sounded like something I d like to do myself Really She s never done that to me Maybe she s a lesbian cat, and your body is not turning her crank I pulled her in for hug As long as my body turns your crank Josie kissed me Oh, definitely I borrowed your toothbrush No problem I ll get you one of your own for next time She shook her head Oh, Eric Is your middle name Commitment No, it s Sky Her eyes widened, and she laughed.I frowned at her What That s normal where I come from Yes, mythical, mystical Nelson, B.C I want to take you there, you ll like it It s a beautiful place spiritual and welcoming One sleepover and I have to meet the parents Josie was smiling though, she didn t seem to mind my scheming My mom will love you, I said Apparently not your dad, she observed.Shit Nothing escaped her Well, my dad wants me to concentrate on hockey all the time He keeps telling me it s my last chance to make it So, he doesn t approve of any extracurricular activities Ahh, like me Awesome, I m the sexual equivalent of taking jazz band Note a copy of I just couldn t get into this one Lots of little and some big things adding up to kill this one for me.Eric He was a hard one to get a handle on I get that he s still young and figuring out a lot in life, and that s part of what I liked His perseverance was good, as was his growth That perseverance when it came to Josie, however, was bordering on uncomfortable for me His character seemed a grab bag of traits, though super obsessive, but very Zen, etc Was a hard one to relate to someti I just couldn t get into this one Lots of little and some big things adding up to kill this one for me.Eric He was a hard one to get a handle on I get that he s still young and figuring out a lot in life, and that s part of what I liked His perseverance was good, as was his growth That perseverance when it came to Josie, however, was bordering on uncomfortable for me His character seemed a grab bag of traits, though super obsessive, but very Zen, etc Was a hard one to relate to sometimes.Josie Just didn t like her Cool and aloof Very, very cool and aloof Even when they re going out, it feels like all the emotion is on Eric s side and Josie just feels flat It s hard to see why he s so obsessed with her She s like a Manic Pixie Dream Girl or whatever the cool and aloof equivalent is , only there to push the main character into life changes We do eventually get her back story, but it s pretty late in the book and by then, it s too little, too late to care She d have been muchrelatable if this was an alternating POV instead of just Eric s view And actually, understanding Josie would have made Ericrelatable too.The Vice coach Personal prejudices much I d think that if a team is allowing personal bias to affect hiring that much, then it would be a winning team If a team is as described the worst in the league, wouldn t they be too desperate for the talent to be putting up with that nonsense The Vice captain WTF Really, I have no words. In short, 2 stars it was OK Did finish it, didn t lose brain cells, and didn t hate it, plus it was free Not one I d reread, though, and have no desire to read the rest of the series
