Me, one page into the story Joy, another facially disfigured artist as a character for the second time in a row I m on a good run Me, two pages into the story Mmmeither I m starting to hallucinate with meta themes or the French really love to pay homage to their classics, because the Count of Monte Cristo vibes from this one are off the charts I wasn t wrong with the latter, as it turned out This graphic novel, which translates as The Vengeance of Count Skarbek is, as the title hi Me, one page into the story Joy, another facially disfigured artist as a character for the second time in a row I m on a good run Me, two pages into the story Mmmeither I m starting to hallucinate with meta themes or the French really love to pay homage to their classics, because the Count of Monte Cristo vibes from this one are off the charts I wasn t wrong with the latter, as it turned out This graphic novel, which translates as The Vengeance of Count Skarbek is, as the title hints, the story of Polish count Mieszko Skarbek and his comeback from the grave to haunt and revenge himself on the man who ruined him and left him for dead a decade back, a plan for which he ll use the identity of a French painter Making use of his immense wealth, he infiltrates the Parisien financial high circles to get access to the powerful people he needs for his vengeful plans, and gets back in touch with a beautiful poseuse who d been the darling muse and model to all painters worth their salt, the same woman he d loved ages ago and whom he believes to have betrayed him in complicity with his deceiver Manipulating the financiers as pawns on a chessboard, he achieves his goal to take the bastard to justice rather easily and achieves his utter and total ruin.Familiar, isn t it One couldn t be blamed for believing this was a retelling of the story of Edmond Dant s and his quest for revenge against Fernand, Danglars and the unfaithful M rc des as told by Dumas in his arch famous novel And whilst it isn t exactly so here, the impression isn t wrong either I don t want to spoil it for readers, so I m only going to say there s definitely a connection between this and The Count of Monte Cristo, one that I found very amusing personally and that even though it may not be true historically, it definitely did sound plausible And what a couple of twistiest twists this plot contains that I didn t see coming The novel has been published in two issues in French, entitled Two Hands of Gold and A Heart of Bronze respectively, and sadly it hasn t been translated someone needs to lecture the Franco Belgian editorials on branching out to the Anglo market It s been illustrated by the great Polish artist Rosinski, whom I knew already from other works, and it seems to me he varied his style a bit for this one, because at least I noticed it was different It looks as if done with watercolours, because it has that watered down and soft appearance this type of pigment tends to have, and the effect is lovely

I read the English version of this It reminds me of the classics such as the Count of Monte Cristo where there is someone who is wronged and slowly over the years plans and executes revenge This first volume ends in a cliff hanger and it happens just as the story gathers momentum The artwork is great and the story has very rich twists and turns which slowly suck the reader in holding their attention to the very end.Obviously I want to know what happens There is murder, revenge, all kinds of I read the English version of this It reminds me of the classics such as the Count of Monte Cristo where there is someone who is wronged and slowly over the years plans and executes revenge This first volume ends in a cliff hanger and it happens just as the story gathers momentum The artwork is great and the story has very rich twists and turns which slowly suck the reader in holding their attention to the very end.Obviously I want to know what happens There is murder, revenge, all kinds of violence and trickery with a cast if dubious characters Even the count himself cannot be fully trusted Is he who he says he is Can his fantastic story be true especially as he uses it to ensnare his enemies This graphic novel overflows with gripping drama and it is well worth reading I just want to know what happens in the end.Copy provoded by Europe Comics via Netgalley in exchange for an unbiased review
