This is a pioneer story of settling a new land under dire circumstances I believe that the author tried to be true to the main points of the story since it is historical fiction and about her our relatives stop here for spoilers What I tried to find out, but couldn t is if the characters in the story were really her ancestors If they were they were fickle and two dimensional The times were hard and the rules for unmarried women were harsh as well, but the girl in the story was very blond about her love for her one time fling that got her pregnant She clung on to her love for him way too long Peter, her love disappeared without us really knowing what he was up to We never did find her brother The book left me wondering if the government ever lived up to the promises made to the people who they talked into coming These people had hard times in Germany under a selfish prince They left hoping to find land and a better way of life They struggled for years before they were given their land, and homes They had to fight and sign petitions to get this I wondered if this part of the story was true The rain and the poor soil made for very hard times, and many died because of poor rations and lack of food The government promoters wanted these people in Nova Scotia to help there be fewer Catholics in the land, and for help to settle and build structures to pay for their passage The summers were so short that it took years to pay off the passage It was truly a sad tale At the end the young girl finally realizes that she does love her husband, and not her boyfriend and tells him to go way That at least was good It was the story of how Lunenburg of the Blue Nose fame, was settled by European people the Indians and French had been there before the French left before these Germans arrived and the Indians weren t as savage as the book made them out to be.
