J ai lu en francais mais je vais ecrire en anglais car je manque conaissance pour m exprimerSo, it s an easy read, interesting if you re interested in the region Red Sea and or the time 19teens Strikingly, de Monfreid appears to have less racial prejudice than any author I ve read from the era, which makes it all theupsetting to find out he sided with the Italian against the Ethiopians in the 1930s war I really wouldn t have guessed it based on this book Obviously, the concept of J ai lu en francais mais je vais ecrire en anglais car je manque conaissance pour m exprimerSo, it s an easy read, interesting if you re interested in the region Red Sea and or the time 19teens Strikingly, de Monfreid appears to have less racial prejudice than any author I ve read from the era, which makes it all theupsetting to find out he sided with the Italian against the Ethiopians in the 1930s war I really wouldn t have guessed it based on this book Obviously, the concept of political correctness was far from his mind There s one point where he uses extremely foul, racist language against two black men which I found quite disturbing Perhaps, though, this instance shouldn t be overestimated as this happens in a moment of rage and because one of the men in question apparently became his lifelong employee I don t knowI will also add that, if anything, he scritical of the race of so called civilisation as of the so called savages in both cases these are terms he uses hyphonated

Between three and four stars The book is good but a bit convoluted and definitely geared to people who know about boats and sailing The story contains some interesting references to pearl diving in the Red Sea, however, and to how they were bought or sold Some anecdotes are clearly urban legends such as the belief that some divers died because they were caught or maimed by the giant clam Tridacna Gigas known as a benitier in French Overall interesting but not gripping
