A ten minute short story about luckless bandit Safiya dealing with than she can handle when her crew tries to rob an ex Guardian who himself is on a hunting mission Story itself serves as a glance to one of Lurker's side missions it doesn't necessarily add anything to main story nor characterization but I think that wasn't author's intention in the first place It simply is there Exists Free for anyone interested to read of Turner's world

After reading Marc Turner's The Greater of Two Evils from Evil is a Matter of Perspective I knew I should bump his books up It was one of best short stories that I've ever read He Brought every aspect of writing a short story to perfection and it was lots of fun with water mages in the high seas There’s A Devil Watching Over You has a smaller scale and has less action but it's well written has a very good structure and it's witty A very good short story and it has great narration by Emma Newman4255A free link to the audiobook

45 StarsWhen I saw that there was a short story available for free set in the same universe as Marc Turner’s Chronicles of the Exile series I jumped at the chance to read about the incredible world he created This short story didn’t disappoint offering a brief but entertaining look at one of my favorite characters from the main series in Luker Essendar My only complaint is that it was too short That and the fact that it doesn’t seem like any books in the main series are forthcoming at any point in the near future

Read all my reviews on 4 months till the next bookEarlier this year I read the debut and first book in a new fantasy series by Marc Turner It was only after I almost finished the book that I realized how much I'd come to like it You can find my thoughts and review hereTogether with the book was released this short story set in the same universe I decided to wait some time to read it so as to make the waiting between the first and second book a bit shorter Since it's now about halfway between the books it was a good momentIf you want to read the story you can find it online for free on the Tor website or if you prefer an audio version this is available on the authors blog really liked this short story It felt good to be back in that universe and now I'm really looking forward to the next book which is unfortunately still four months away I think this might be one of those fantasy series that I'll be following for the next yearsThere's A Devil Watching Over You is a short story set in the universe of The Chronicle of the Exile The first book in this series is When The Heavens Fall and the second Dragon Hunters is going to be published next year

So I recently finished reading 'Dragon Hunters' and I've realised I'm now kind of hooked on Marc Turner's 'Chronicles of the Exile' To postpone the inevitable withdrawal symptoms at least until book 3 comes out in September I thought I'd check out this short story which is available for free on the author's website as well as TorcomShort and exciting 'Devil' tells the story of Safiya an unlucky bandit with a mysterious past and her attempts to evade the terrifyingly powerful individual who appears to be hunting her Like many of Turner's protagonists Safiya is strong minded and opportunistic The dialogue between her and her companions showcases the author's trademark realism and dark humour and I look forward to the possibility of spotting Safiya in future booksAs far as short stories go 'Devil' is an entertaining snippet a small slice of what to expect from the main series For me it was an easy read and a brief but welcome return to the Lands of the Exile I especially enjoyed the cameo appearance by Luker full of suspense and finishing with an epic and surprising confrontationTurner's fictional world and the eminently readable prose that brings it to life makes every outing with this series even enjoyable than the last

3 starsA good short story Not great as an introduction to the world or the characters from 'When The Heaven Falls' but I liked the writing style and I will definitely read the book

  8. Marco Marco says:

I am always wary of reading short tie in stories set in the world of previously published book sagas They are often not as good or they reuire reading the saga to really appreciate them In this case I was proven wrong I did enjoy the story without not knowing anything about Turner's Haven's Fall universeThis is the story of Safiya and her fellow bandits They thought they had found an easy mark but they uickly learned that they picked the worst possible victim Now Luker Essendar one of the warrior Guardians of Erin Elal is after them and his relentless pursuit is driving the bandits toward an abandoned fort one that appears strewn with evidence of a terrible battle But nothing is exactly as it seems

  9. Shawn Shawn says:

While this short didn't expose a lot about Turner's world it showed me enough by the end to gain my interest for the series I look forward to reading When The Heavens Fall and seeing where these ideas progress and maybe where they originatedI think readers who are already familiar with the books may find this one entertainingI'm guessing here

Read this ahead of the two main novels which I picked up a while agoIt's a short story with a nice sense of place and person; the action is a bit vague but the magic seems interesting as far as that goesNot a lot to it but it is a free short story so I suppose there doesn't need to be
