This is a hefty coffee table book with gorgeous photographs that I found after listening to a fascinating radio interview with the author and photographer on my local public radio station But it is WAY than just that The photos and accompanying text specifically follows Grizzly 399 and her offspring as they live and move in the greater Yellowstone area As the author follows their stories the text touches on the history of the grizzly bear what they eat both currently and historically and how interactions with people impact them individually and as a species The overall content of this book contributes to national and international conversations about the world's wild places and particularly the large creatures that live near the top of the food chain The recovery of grizzly bear populations in our nation's west is a success story but as with lions and tigers in other parts of the world their ability to thrive is at risk
