Chasing Texas is a genuine treasure especially for readers who live in Texas and know the Lone Star State well Written in three parts dealing with three generations of Rountree Boys author Reece Newton a native of Beaumont vividly brings to life the sights and smells the wildlife and flora of the Piney Woods of East Texas in the first section beginning in 1915 in Hardin County and then taking the reader and Sedge Rountree on a journey across Central Texas to a ranch in Menard County The second section is set in Chambers and Jefferson Counties in Southeast Texas in 1957 Having grown up in Beaumont in the late 1950s and early 1960s and knowing Reece Newton while attending Lamar State College of Technology today Lamar University I could readily relate to the many small towns between Beaumont and High Island on the Gulf Coast that he describes with such clarity Again the main action involves ranch life but in a setting that is novel and unusual to readers who picture ranch life in Texas A highlight of this second part is a trip the Rountree Brothers Travis and Wes make to a dance hall called The Big Oaks located across the state line in Louisiana a popular attraction for college students and young people when 18 was the legal drinking age in Louisiana The last section of the novel brings the reader to current conditions in Texas and Mexico Set in Presidio County in West Texas in 2004 Ezell Rountree called “Easy” works on a ranch and is married to a beautiful young Mexican woman They are plagued with troubles caused by the Mexican drug cartel and Ezell crosses the border in an attempt to alleviate these troubles This time Newton takes the reader up into the Texas mountains and then out onto the dry Mexican desert Newton has stated that he was greatly influenced by the writings of Cormac McCarthy but the final chapters brought to my mind John Steinbeck’s excellent short story “Flight”

Settle down for a good read with Chasing Texas It's warm well paced and at the end a little unsettling This saga begins with Sedge a young boy bent on following his dream west and ends two generations and eighty years later with Ezell in a cave in far west Texas Through the lives of the Rountree boys their families and the folks they meet along the way Newton depicts the Texan character and the struggle to preserve life ways and values rapidly disappearing A master of description he takes the reader through twentieth century Texas with strong characters and captivating landscapes Beautifully written a book not easily forgotten
