Would have liked to have been warned about the heavy Christianity stuff in the bookI did not finish it but that's REALLY off putting for me and I think if authors are going to warn about sexual content they should also warn if they're going to go all church y on me too

35 starsUsually when I read a book I re read the synopsis first because by the time I've finally managed to get hold of it I've forgotten what it's about If I don't read it I find that before I can get too far in I feel like I have to read it With Strength however I felt no such compulsion and as such I had no idea what to expect going in bar the fact that this was paranormal What I got then was a uniue add to the paranormal genre a healthy smearing of sizzling romance and a snarky protag who you can't help but loveThe rumour on campus is that Wallace Blake is not a sane person Stories circulate about what happened to his old roommate and weird noises can be heard from his room in the evenings As such everyone stays well away from him That is until Rena Collins unwittingly crashes into him on her way to see a friend That encounter accompanied by a couple others leaves her intrigued He seems perfectly normal and yet there's something different about him Not his sanity But there are uestions such as how he leaves her with bruises after only minimal physical contact Soon she learns that he isn't human and now somehow she's landed herself in a situation that is soon going to spill into war She's being watched and the only way for her and Wallace to make it out alive is by fightingI've been feeling for want of a better word somewhat dead lately simply because things have been really hectic and intense for me But for the time I was reading Strength I felt so much awake With the very first page Carrie Butler had me sitting up alert and reading keenly The scene you find yourself in upon opening the book is not a typical one In fact there is little to be found here that is typical The paranormal element is certainly a different one I appreciated this enjoying the revelation of Wallace's true identity and then finding out about his family and the magic of his bloodline In reading Strength I found myself laughing freuently annoyed every time I was forced to put it downThis is in large part due to Rena Tough sarcastic funny hers is a voice that will not fade uickly It's one that really does call out to you from the start Rena is not your average heroine She's not afraid to fight and doesn't simply end up paralysed every time she gets stuck in a difficult situation; nor does she give up Her sarcasm and wit make her all the likeable not to mention the fact that she ends up being funny without meaning to Added to all of this is her genuine concern for the people around her Wallace too is not simply a cardboard character A good guy surrounded by people who misunderstand him entirely he suffers a lot of pain both physical and emotional I was glad to see him finally have the chance to open up and to really be supported by Rena He in turn supported her whenever she was feeling vulnerable Their relationship is a slow one plagued by doubts and insecurities but finally working its way to a positive end for both of themThat's not to say this book didn't have flaws Because it definitely did There were character and plot issues that I found myself unhappy with where certain things were overlooked or caused me confusion Early on there was also an element brought in that did have me concerned about where the story was heading and I was thankful when it didn't go that way Yet at the same time it made me wonder what its purpose was because that particular line was never brought back Nor did I like Rena's friends Gabby and Aiden Both irritated me for various reasonsAll in all however there is no denying that I thoroughly enjoyed reading Strength Despite my concerns this is still something different and I loved reading from Rena's perspective It was great as well to have a love interest who while strong dark and fierce is not a bad boy I will certainly be keeping an eye out from now on to see what Carrie Butler has to offer This review is also posted on my blog

I could not put this book down That is saying a lot considering that I don’t normally read paranormal romance or paranormal anything for that matter But Carrie Butler’s debut novel is brilliant riveting imaginative and seamlessly written Rena Collins is an average college student albeit uite a bit spunkier than most young women When she meets Wallace Blake a reclusive and mysterious suitemate of one of her best friends sparks fly She and Wallace get to know each other scrupulously avoiding the subject of their attraction for each other until Rena delves too far into Wallace’s family life and finds herself an unwitting pawn in a dangerous game Turns out Wallace comes from a long line of supernatural beings with varying powers As the title of this book implies strength is Wallace’s power There is conflict brewing among Wallace’s kind and Rena has just walked right smack into the middle of it In an effort to protect her both from his own superhuman strength and from the race of warring supernatural beings Wallace pushes her away and tries to deny the romantic feelings that have developed between them But there is no stopping this kind of bond They have to stand together against the impending peril—come what mayWhat Butler does perfectly in this book is subtlety sexual tension and voice The narrative doesn’t hit you over the head with the paranormal element Butler works up to it lending it credibility and making it all seem feasible while laying the groundwork for Wallace and Rena’s relationship The tension between these two is palpable You won’t be able to get enough You’ll be racing through the pages wanting As things grow heated between them you’ll be on the edge of your seat salivating and then when the majority of the paranormal elements come into play it is like an explosion of awesomeness You’re so invested in the characters by that point that the paranormal element just makes both them and the story itself a million times richer and satisfying Also in terms of paranormal elements I love what Butler has done here I don’t want to give too much away but for me the paranormal elements in this book were fascinating and original So much interesting and engaging than vampires and werewolves She doesn’t overdo it and I think that’s what makes this book truly great I mentioned voice in the last paragraph as one of the things that Butler does perfectly in this book and what I mean by that is that Rena’s voice is excellent She is warm and feisty caring and inuisitive and downright hilarious I laughed out loud several times while reading this book Again Rena’s down to earth voice lends credibility to the narrative and I think because of that and Butler’s mastery of the art of subtlety this book will appeal to a very wide variety of readers—including readers who don’t normally enjoy this type of book It has been an incredibly long time since I read a book that thrilled me fascinated me made me laugh made me cheer and made me all warm and fuzzy—all in one fabulous package Read this book It has it all It is flawless in its execution and you won’t be sorry

45 StarsI had gotten myself into a New Adult book funk and was looking for something different I had Strength on my reader for a while and decided it was time to give it a try and I’m so glad I did I absolutely loved it Even though it still falls into the New Adult genres it had a paranormal twist to it That twist is exactly what I needed to pull me out of my reading funk Strength is told from the point of view of Rena Collins feisty strong independent college junior I loved Rena she wasn’t whinny or indecisive she had her values she stood by her friends and did her best not to judge a person based on rumors Wallace Blake aka “the madman” of Wilcox College the name he received because of the tortured sounds that come out of his room every night Rena and Wallace literally run right into each other leaving Rena scared nervous and bruised When Wallace apologizes for the bruises he left on Rena during their accidental run she sees the sincerity in him and that he is sad and angry with himself over hurting her Needing to know how a simple run in could leave bruises on her body and wanting to make sure Wallace is okay while those awful noises are coming from his room Rena sets out to find out the truth about the madman of Wilcox CollegeI completely fell in love with Wallace; he was big and extremely strong but such a softy on the inside All he wanted was a normal life like everyone else at school but was out casted because of rumors He is so sweet and kind and gently to Rena while they become friends Carrie Butler does a great job mixing suspense mystery drama and romance Once I started Strength I couldn’t put it down I had to keep going to the next chapter to find out what was going to happen next Once I was done with Strength I picked Courage up right away and I loved that just as much Mark of Nexus is a great paranormal NA series I’m completely hooked I received this book in exchange for and honest review

This book was part of a blog tour I received a copy for my honest reviewI have to start by saying from the front cover I was expecting a totally different sort of bookmaybe romance and passion than mysteryThe beginning of this book starts out exactly like the blurb says with Rena bumping head first into the chest of outcast and all round mysterious character Wallace I must admit with all the nighttime going's on in his room I was thinking this book was going to take a completely different paranormal path but I was pleasantly surprised Through Rena's sleuthing trying to get to the bottom of the puzzle that is Wallace she finds herself unexplainable drawn to him The she digs the uestions she has and meeting Wallace's family doesn't help matters if anything it causes troubleMy favorite part about this book was Rena I am a sucker for dry humor and wit and she had it in spades She made the bits that could have dragged in this book funny and entertainingIt was well written however I didn't have any heart pounding moments and the actual bad guys at the end seemed a little anti climatic I mean they were bad but then were they? You will understand when you read the book as I don't want to give to much awaybut everyone else seemed to feel differently about the circumstances than Rena Me and Rena were on the same page and freaking out a bit about the future Although the cover makes this book look rather raunchy I will say that this is definitely a Young adult new adult book Nothing really bad in the story that couldn't be read by a younger reader so don't let the cover fool youIt will be interesting to see where this paranormal series goes The powers they have and the development of the nexus bond between Wallace and Rena has pricked my interestIt was an original concept and as I stated at beginning of this review it was a pleasant surprise to have I will look for the next book

It's official I have a new book boyfriend I'm officially claiming him in public I'm in love with Wallace This book jumped off the computer screen at me the first time I read the description I'll admit that I had a few reservations because while I knew it was paranormal I wasn't sure what kind of paranormal it was I was expecting werewolves or some other kind of shape shifter but I was pleasantly surprised This book held my interest from the first page and I didn't want to put it down And when I did have to because life intruded on my reading time I was counting down the interminable minutes until I could go back to Wallace and Rena I honestly loved every moment of this book I loved the chemistry between Rena and Wallace My least favorite aspect of the book was Cole When he was first introduced I was intrigued Then I came to hate him I wanted to throw him off a cliff onto some very sharp rocks below But he slowly grew on me I can't say I loved him but we came to an uneasy coexistence This is part of a series but this book has a definite ending THERE ARE NO CLIFFS I definitely can't wait to read the next book in the series and Carrie Butler definitely has a new fan Copy of this book was generously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review

Strength This review and others can be found at  I thought Strength was a great New Adult book and I loved the paranormal twist to it It was different to other books of this genre that I have read and I loved that about it The characters are great the romance is sweet whilst also being incredibly steamy and the background to the story is very interesting Rena is such a fiery powerful character Although she doesn’t possess any powers her emotional strength and unwillingness to give up makes her very special Not many people would be able to remain as strong as Rena does during the things she goes through nor would they try to fight people that basically have super powers Wallace is another amazing character; sexy smart and a social outcast due to being misunderstood yes you heard me right; this is an NA book where the guy ISN’T a popular bad boy who sleeps around all the time He is also mysterious and secretive with a dark past Together Wallace and Rena make a couple that you just really want to be together and you root for their relationship There are some very interesting secondary characters that I really want to read about especially Cole I detested him to start but I did grow to like him slightly and there seems to be lots of depth to his personality I really loved the second half of the book as this is where the paranormal aspects starts to come into play and the action really gets going The heat between the two main characters also becomes scorching The sex scenes well almost sex scenes sizzle with lots of passion and sexual tension I can’t wait to see what happens next for Wallace Rena and all the other characters in the next book in the series After how the book ended I can’t wait for and I am also looking forwards to finding out about the Dynari This is a book I would definitely recommend and I think everyone should mark their calendars for its release in March I received an e arc copy of this book in exchange for an honest review this has not affected my opinions of the book in any way”

This first novel of the Mark of Nexus series was a refreshingly different story and I really enjoyed it The characters weren't predictable the plot twists kept me guessing and there was a steamy romance building that had me swooningSassy Rena Collins had far bravery than her small frame would imply and I loved what a little spitfire she was When Wallace crashed into her life it opened her eyes not only to this strange world of the Dynari but also to her own faults This man is one sexy enigma and the mystery surrounding him catches the reader the moment he enters the story Rumors about the strange noises coming from his dorm room left everyone assuming the worst but the Rena saw of him the she couldn't stay away He had this brooding sweet sexiness that drew her okay and me to him like a magnet My heart broke for the pain he had to endure and the lonely life he'd lived but here's hoping Rena will be the answer to all his problems as this series goes on The setup for this story is uniue in that it reads like a NA novel until Wallace's secrets are revealed at which point it shifts to an intense paranormal romance This is also when their relationship shifts from guarded attraction to lustful passion and I loved seeing Wallace finally give in to the idea of letting himself be happy with Rena The build up made their moment much meaningful and deliciously steamy and I loved what it meant for them The chemistry between these characters is a powerful thing and I'm looking forward to a lot stolen moments for Rena and Wallace down the road There were so many twists and revelations as Strength wound down that by the time it was done I was left craving so much The paranormal side of the story gets really amped up and Carrie Butler's Dynari took on a whole new light With many uestions still left unanswered the seuel is definitely on my must buy list and I highly recommend this book to romance and fantasy fans

Strength follows the story of Rena A normal college student who one day walks right into social outcast Wallace It only takes one meeting with him to realize that everything she thought she knew about him was wrong She desperately wants to know what's wrong with him and to prove the theories about him wrong She soon finds out that there is so much to Wallace than meets the eye and will have to decide if being with him is worth possibly risking her lifeStrength had me drawn in from the first page I liked the mystery surrounding Wallace and I enjoyed trying to figure out exactly what was going on with him I thought the pacing of the story worked out really well I enjoyed Carrie Butler's take on paranormal romance I think this book has something for everyone There was some good action suspense mystery twists and romance I actually like that the romance wasn't the main focus of this storyOverall I found this book to be very enjoyable and I'm looking forward to seeing what will happen nextI received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
