    This book is part of a series called Artists Through the Ages and is intended for ages 8 11 The table of contents includes a dozen or so different headings that are each limited to two pages of text While there are several images of Van Gogh s paintings, several of the sections have large blocks of text in paragraph form, which does not seem to be the most effective way of engaging lower leveled readers While the author attempts to make the textaccessible using narrative language, I t This book is part of a series called Artists Through the Ages and is intended for ages 8 11 The table of contents includes a dozen or so different headings that are each limited to two pages of text While there are several images of Van Gogh s paintings, several of the sections have large blocks of text in paragraph form, which does not seem to be the most effective way of engaging lower leveled readers While the author attempts to make the textaccessible using narrative language, I think that the pages could have been organized to bevisually appealing There are also French words or phrases interspersed throughout the book that are not referenced in the text I would ve liked to see either translations or information that explains what the French words mean The text also refers to many proper nouns such as the names of people or cities that could easily confuse younger readers or English Language Learners I think it would ve been helpful to have the pronunciation of these proper nouns in parentheses to help readers sound out the foreign letter combinations that do not exist in English While this book contains valuable information about Van Gogh s personal life and the meaning behind some of his most famous paintings, I do not anticipate using it for younger grades 3rd and below 4th graders may be able to navigate the overwhelmingly text filled pageseasily, but even then the content is fairly limited I could see using it for discussion purposes or showing children examples of paintings in a guided lesson, but I do not recommend suggesting that students use this book on their own for a report or independent project
