I thought these thoughtful, measured poems were okay but never punched through to a point where they were actually meaningful to me C Philips makes some interesting observations in his introduction, and I mostly agree and would like to add that this is one of those books interested not just in death but also in passing judgment on Western culture and what it has wrought But the way it tackles that challenge by bbbing ruins in Europe gave this book a pre dated feel. The poems are smart, and I thought these thoughtful, measured poems were okay but never punched through to a point where they were actually meaningful to me C Philips makes some interesting observations in his introduction, and I mostly agree and would like to add that this is one of those books interested not just in death but also in passing judgment on Western culture and what it has wrought But the way it tackles that challenge by bbbing ruins in Europe gave this book a pre dated feel. The poems are smart, and they are ambitious But they felt a little too academic to me, and I like things that are academic There wasn t enough zip, invention, music, fresh insight, or formal surprise here to really elevate this to a must read level

Though obviously a poet of talent and gorgeous lyricism, Will Schutt s Westerly did little for me The hotspots in this collection were far and few between Although I did enjoy Schutt s translations and his poems American Window Dressing Apparitions and Incarnations, I felt the poems in this collection strayed into baroque In my opinion, Schutt is at his best when operating with restrained language One of my favorite poems from this collection is American Window Dressing, which fe Though obviously a poet of talent and gorgeous lyricism, Will Schutt s Westerly did little for me The hotspots in this collection were far and few between Although I did enjoy Schutt s translations and his poems American Window Dressing Apparitions and Incarnations, I felt the poems in this collection strayed into baroque In my opinion, Schutt is at his best when operating with restrained language One of my favorite poems from this collection is American Window Dressing, which felt honed in this way and alive with realistic detail and things The things make the poem Schutt s cuckoo clock twigged from scrap metal, a single copy of Everyman s Haiku with it s look at me moon sheen and heads of bok choy noosed in rubber bands and pale eyed fish laid out on ice were particularly resonant and vivid Apparitions and Incarnations was another notable poem, as were Schutt s translations what do you do tr of Edoardo Sanguinetti , I taught my sons Sanguinetti , and Rain tr of Eugenia Montale

This book has something stunning lines For instance Perspective, put one way, is invitation to accident Strange Giraffe However, these poems seem wanting in tension and release, that certain force that suddenly pushes a reader to an indeterminate plane, that bow and arrow I can t help comparing it to its immediate predecessor, and how that flipped me all over Perhaps, that has filtered my reading A good exception to this is Crenellated Playroom, which is the longest poem in the bunch This book has something stunning lines For instance Perspective, put one way, is invitation to accident Strange Giraffe However, these poems seem wanting in tension and release, that certain force that suddenly pushes a reader to an indeterminate plane, that bow and arrow I can t help comparing it to its immediate predecessor, and how that flipped me all over Perhaps, that has filtered my reading A good exception to this is Crenellated Playroom, which is the longest poem in the bunch

Let s be honest I skimmed, and only devoted serious time to a few of his poems I did enjoy the poetry and could see using some in a class someday with Schutt s permission, but he seemed to be writing from a position of privilege a bit too close to home for me to embrace His speakers have money and travel for pleasure, and it is hard for me to validate these subjects when they are so close to the things I feel guilty about.

He judged a poetry contest I entered and although I didn t win it my professor told me he d thought my poems were really interesting and showed a lot of promise or something along those lines I was glad to hear that because I loved this book.
