There is a lot of information in this book about mans search for wellness over the past couple centuries many of them still in practice today There are a number of photos ads and illustrations throughout but I would've liked to see much upping the graphics factor would've made this a fantastic book

After reading Road to Wellville uack Tales of Medical Fraud from the Museum of uestionable Medical DevicesI wanted to learn about this topic so I dug out my copy of The Great American Medicine Show Being an Illustrated History of Hucksters Healers Health Evangelists and Heroes from Plymouth Rock to the PresentIt's a coffee table sized book that covers the history of the unusual medical trends that came about in the USA Each chapter is dedicated to a specific topic with Homeopathy Temperance Osteopathy Diet Fads being some examples Each chapter follows a chronological timeline for the topic with the appropriate illustrations The style is light and informal; however the bibliography at the end shows the extensive research that went into this work Also includes an indexAlthough the focus of this book is crackpot medicine the authors do give credit where credit is due For example they discuss how osteopaths and chiropractors are becoming mainstream and how organic farming is becoming an important part of agricultureIf you're interested in the history of medical fads in America I would recommend reading this book

This book was absolutely fascinating although since it's sort of a reference book it's best to take it in small doses no pun intended The history of medications as we know them today is really neat I'm sure there are those elders out there who still remember some of these things being sold at local drug stores
